But which is the alternative you speak of?
There is an Alternate Install CD that has no GUI on the install wizard. It still does the same stuff, but some machines don't like the LiveCD GUI for whatever reason.

When you're at the the download page of Ubuntu [or whatever *buntu you want to use], you can go to 'alternate download options' and get either a direct download or a torrent for the alternate install CD.

Got it working last night after all, seems the original CD I made wasn't good enough for THAT machine.

Thanks though! Rep+

cant see the images on the network im using right now

but from the pm you sent me with command output, your wireless network card is working, its just not enabled

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

^^ that should start your network card, you may need a tool like wicd to manage wireless networks after that
Kinda meh now...

i dont know the package name of wireless managers such as wicd :/ but you can find it easily with a search in the ubuntu software center or synaptic id guess

wicd will be the tool that you USE to connect to the networks, its a really nice graphical gui to manage wireless networks

to enable your wireless card you have to use the command

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

and then open up wicd and configure the password for your network and tell it to auto join, and connect

there is other tools ofc, just the one i know is wicd

EDIT: though im sure there is an easier way by starting a service inside ubuntu :/ i just dont know ubuntu enough... could try start-network or something... or service networking restart (both sudo'd ofc)
Kinda meh now...
