Usually the sound on a motherboard is more than enough for a gaming computer. Unless you are really into music and Hi-fi recordings then you will not need an additional sound card. If you need a sound card that is that high of quality then get ready to spend 100+ for one.
The sound on a motherboard is usually 7 channel surround which should be plenty more than enough for any gamer. Even though they have 7 channels that does not mean that it is high quality sound, but it is not low either. So I would just stick with the onboard sound. Personally I prefer stereo speakers since then you only need to worry about if the left or right one is louder and that is the direction the sound is coming from.
