My desktop speakers get loud enough but when i switch to my headphones its loud but i want to be able to go louder. I am using onboard sound.

1. do i need a dedicated sound card?

2. do i need a dac/amp type device like something from headroom?

my iphone was able to drive the M50's as loud as anyone could ever want, so i'd be surprised if an amp is the answer you're looking for. sort of a goofy suggestion but important nonetheless: are you sure you have them fully plugged into the jack?

Did you mean shouldn't? Or did you mean should? Don't you want them to get as loud as possible? Why shouldn't they be able to go full volume?

Pick up a Fiio E5 for cheap, theyll get the M50s as loud as you'll ever need as M50s have low impedance. A dedicated sound card would be a good idea at high volumes, as onboard sound starts distorting a @ med/high volume.

what i mean is 85% of max volume should be too loud. there's no headroom.

Something is wrong. I'm using a sound card, but anything past 30% is dangerously close to blowing out my ear drums.

I can guarantee it's your onboard. Motherboards with Realtek typically don't put out much power.

1. Yes. Find a Cheap Xonar DG or Audigy SE.

2. No.
