I've got a serious question about Lucid's Hydra that I can't find anywhere.

I did actually look for the answer to this question but I couldn't find an answer. + rep to anyone who can even give me an IDEA of what I can expect or if my (hopes) are way too high.

Here's my question: I just lucked into an i7 2600k AND found a buyer for my sig processor/ram/mobo. And I've got a reasonable budget to work with. I currently have a 4890 and a 5870. If I were to get a hydra mobo (reasonably/highly priced - $300 or less) - is there one that would allow me to use all three of these gpus simultaneously? (Third being the onboard gpu on the i7). Is there one that would allow me to use the 4890 and 5870? Or 5870 and onboard (pretty sure this is possible)?

Also, would there be diminished performance from any of them? Any idea what PSU requirements I'm looking at?

Sorry for this mildly noob question, I just couldn't find anything related to it. I'm sure the information is somewhere, I just didn't know where. And I assume it's in someone's head.

Also, I didn't know where to post this on the forum..if a mod wants to move it, that's just fine too.

Thanks!

1. this should do the trick: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-282-_-Product

supports the crossfire you are looking for

2. Hydra chips will SIGNIFICANTLY diminish the performance of these in trifire... i don't even recommend it since hydra still has long ways to go.

3. I'd recommend a good 850-1000w psu and you should be good. The ax850, seasonic x 850 or the HX 1000w are the ones that come to mind

just reread the post... if you are only running one 5870 and one 48xx card then a good 750 watt will do the trick, get a seasonic x 750 or a 760.
however if you plan on upgrading to multiple gpus in the future then just get a 850 or more depending on whether you want 2,3, or 4 cards

+ rep. How diminished are we talking? like 30% each...or 50% each? ....and I think my math is failing too hard right now to calculate what that equals in actual end performance so a flat % wouldn't even help. I obviously care most about end performance, specifically for gaming.

here is an in depth review: http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-bi...review-test/22
(hydra chip on different board... same chipset though)

it'll give you all the info you need, but seriously take head... the hydra chip can be very buggy and might not work for every game you play

That sounds...really bad. Has it not come along in the past 15 months at all? This was just an idea I had, not something crucial. I just remember the hype over the hydra when it was announced (and forgot about it until now because I am about to upgrading) and thought it would be nice to use my spare 4890 also. However, if the gains are negligible (like 5fps on Crysis) then I'll save my money and find a good Gigabyte board to OC with. That's what I care about a lot more..I just thought it would be nice to experiment with the Hydra. But not if it sucks

or you could sell both of the older ati cards for mint right now to bitcoin people and get newer 6xxx cards
I was under the understanding that the hydra didn't work with integrated gpu's is that correct?

yea man... as of right now it still sucks badly... just get a good gigabyte board keep your 5870, sell the older card and save up... maybe you can get a second one and do a proper crossfire

Yea it is which is why you should stay keep a 10 ft pole between you and a hydra board. It's a shame too, cuz that Pure Black P67 is priced just right.
