the price is great too , I can use the rest of my money to pick some soundcard

for $500 get Two 2GB 560's. Booty Warrior has that setup and it kicks ass. Faster than a 580 and 6970 and the 2GB lets you use some high rez textures.

With the latest drivers, the 580 is not better then the 6970 anymore. It depends more on the games you want to play. They trade blows in different games.

2 unlock 6950 in Crossfire would rape any 580 on the market, no matter how many VRAM it has, at that resolution.

Or else, buy the 6970 and buy yourself something nice with the money you will save, like a SSD (Crucial C300 64Gb for around 100$ for example).

Indeed. 2GB 560 Ti SLI or 2GB 6950 X-fire are solid high res setups. I've found that I very rarely break 1.5GB VRAM usage, so you could also look into getting some 480s now that they've come down in price.

A single 580 (3GB or not) won't give stellar performance at that res in heavy titles. You will have a more open ended upgrade path, but you'll find yourself wanting to upgrade a lot sooner as well.

Mostly fixed. It's very dependent on your needs which card is better in each situation.

The GTX 580 1.5 GB is only worse than the HD 6970 if the game you're playing is VRAM heavy, otherwise, it's the faster card. Also, I hope HD 5970 was a typo, the HD 5970 is as fast as the GTX 580.
