New build keeps freezing

Thread Starter
Hey, everyone. This is my first build and I have been having some issues.

i5-2500k
ASRock z68 Pro3
16gb Corsair Vengeance c8 ram
2 1tb samsung f3 in raid 0
XFX 650W core edition

My computer freezes while playing games and once while I was browsing the web. I ran memtest86 on the ram and one time it came back with errors. All other tests who it was fine.

Normal operating temps are 26-29C. I ran prime 95 for 3 hours and had a max temp of 40C. And no stability issues.

Does anyone have any clue why this is happening? It seems to mostly happen during games and only once while browsing. I am thinking either my mobo, ram or psu. I am beginning to rule out ram because I have tried so many different configs and it still froze. Not sure how I would figure out it is the mobo. Another theory of mine is possibly the onboard graphics. Either the drivers or hardware itself. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the long explanation.

Sounds like the onboard video is the problem.....I would try a voltage bump for MB NB, or maybe just a fan blowing across it( NB ) may fix the problem. Do you have onboard overclocked?

Everything is stock right now except for the timings of the ram. The auto settings put the timing at 9-9-9-24 but the ram I bought is suppose to be stable at 8-8-8-24 so I changed that. What would I set my northbridge voltage? Sorry I am very new to overclocking. I already have two side mounted fans so I think I have that covered. I am wondering if I should just RMA the board. I also have graphics card coming in on Wednesday do you think it will make a difference? I just want to get the build stable so I can move on to some new projects.

If your going to add a video card and disable onboard then I would say you'll probably be fine. Once you add video card it takes the load of onboard completely so your problem will vanish. But it does sound like it was overheating , so maybe take another look at your cooling setup to make sure your getting enough air to MB chipset Or it could be that factory TIM was not put on right and you need to reseat your chipset blocks.

This.

Try bumping up your VCCA, your running 16GB of ram so your most likely not getting enough juice to keep them stable with the "auto" setting.

I am not sure how to cool the MB anymore than I already have. I have 7 fans in my case right now. I am not sure how it is overheating. I am also currently running 8gb of ram. Is VCCA the same as VCCSA? Should I bump that to 1V? I have no idea what a safe bump would be. My only concern is if the MB is not defective and something is wrong with my setup. I really want to take advantage of the onboard graphics since the Z68 supports lucid.

Guarantee you its the Ram, I had the same problem for over a year. Constant Freezing that seemed unrelated to load or temparture.

The ram was rated for 1600mhz, the only way I could get stability was to drop it to 1333mhz.

You are also using a lot of ram, test each stick individually and if they all pass, put the timings back to T9

Bet this fixes it

Yes they're the same. Try setting it to 1.1v.

I have tested all the ram in pairs and they all check out fine. And I am having the issues with 8gb and 16gb so I would be surprised if it has to do with the ram. I have had the ram at 9-9-9-24 at 1333 with the same issues. I am leaning more towards the onboard video. I am getting around 40-42C on the heat sink so that means its gotta be pretty hot. But I am not sure if its defective or suppose to be like that.
