Help converting a vinyl collection to digital

Thread Starter
Hey guys, edit: and gals

I've been doing some google searching, but I can't find clear answers to the questions I have... My dad has a really extensive vinyl collection (due to a family friend that worked at a radio station in the 60s-70s and gave him old records), and I've decided to spend the summer digitizing that collection. I was hoping you all might be able to point me in the right direction. I imagine I'll need some sort of kit or machine to clean and repair the records (there are a lot, so a little automation wouldn't hurt). I've currently got an Xonar Essence STX audio card (if that helps in any way), but other that I don't have any requisite hardware/software. I want the highest quality audio possible.

Thanks anyone!
Rick

i'll presume u have a turn table? anyways, i'm not really sure what the process is, but FLAC is the format if u want it to be the best quality available. it's uncompressed. Try searching around for how to convert vinyl's to FLAC, there are programs out there that could help you. did a quick search and i found this anyways, i'm not sure if that'll help. But it's like ripping a CD to MP3, but you need more items. and instead of a cd-player u need a turntable. =)

Actually I do not yet have a turn table, so I'm also asking a question about what turn table I need.

that's a hard question to reply, as turntables can cost quite a bit. maybe try looking for second hands as it should serve the purpose.

I actually have a turntable that connects through USB and basically records to MP3 and or whatever

i however only use it to just play stuff with it. Looks a lot like

If you'd like I'll make some time and hook it up to See if i can get it to do FLAC and see how well it sounds

I have converted most of my records to digital and i found that two different decks work very well but for very different reasons!
I
the technics 1200 was good for totally flat recordings but for the sound i enjoyed to hear, nothing beats the garrard decks, for me specifically the 4hf(h).
its down to how much you love the music on those records...cheap decks work so price can be worked down by using onboard sound and the cheapest functional deck you can find.
i use samplitude for recording sound and it works very well.

if you have a family friend with a turntable, try asking them for the summer. It'll surprise you how many people actually have a turntable. =) (of course currently around their 60's-70's, or try looking for audiophiles.)

That looks interesting. I'd be really curious to hear how that sounds.

On another note: Is it easy to convert from FLAC to lossless m4a? I'm organizing the vinyl recordings as part of a large itunes library, and it would be nice to be able to format the song info the same.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into those. I don't want to bust my wallet, but I also want to have this done right. I don't know how much longer the records are going to last, and a good amount of them are "demo" ones that are totally irreplaceable.

edit: Anyway, I'm out for the night. Thanks for all your help guys.
