Is thermal paste between pipes still the way to go for HDT coolers?

When I last put together a system using an S1283, the consensus was that putting lines of thermal grease on the aluminum supports in between the heatpipes was the best way to go, like this. Just one blob in the center of the IHS could get caught in the grooves between the pipes and the aluminum and not spread to the rest of the heatsink.

Is this still the preferred method, or has something else shown to be better? And if I do it this way, should I pre-fill the gaps between the copper pipes and aluminum with thermal compound, or just let it sink in there naturally while applying the heatsink?

If it matters, I'll be using gelid GC extreme - their instructions recommend spreading the paste around the CPU with a little plastic applicator they give you, but I'm planning to ignore that and do whatever people have found to work best. I'll be using a Xigamtek Aegir, which has 2 8mm heat pipes in the center and 2 6mm on the outside - so there would be 3 spaces between the heatpipes to put lines on.

Thats been the consensus on the best way to do it. My strategy was go to flat based coolers like megahalems and TRUE, D-14, or SA and such. Also, small dot in middle has always been my preference.

I think, one blob in the center would be the best way...
I've tried one blob on the center, and one blob on each pipes,

the result, one blob in the center seems to be better...

I have to spread the paste beforehand on my Tuniq to get a smooth layer, it's not a perfectly flat base, but it still performs great with a little bit of OCD.

I just apply paste to the base of the heatsink, spread it flat with a razor to fill the gaps, and wipe off the excess.

Then I apply a small dot on the center of the CPU's IHS as I normally would.

Gelid gives a little plastic applicator with the stuff to spread it out evenly across the IHS. Tweaktown's review of the stuff compared different application methods and it really does look like spreading it looks like the best coverage. Would it be a bad idea just to spread it like he did in the first pic there? What's the downside, potential air bubbles?

Btw, why is it that the compound is applied to the aluminum between the pipes? It seems to me that a small line on each pipe itself would make sure there was enough compound on the important part, and then excess could be channeled through the gaps between the pipe and the aluminum. Is there something wrong with that idea?

If you did not fill the gaps first and put just the lines or a dot on,most of the paste would go to filling the gaps before it ever spreads to the rest of the pipes.

The reason for putting it on the aluminum is just spacing to ensure even spread.

As can be seen in the pics I posted.
