Wolfdale CPUs don't have L3 cache.

And by much bigger caches you mean twice the cache. 2 MB of L2 cache for the 45nm Pentium Dual Cores vs. 4 MB of L2 cache for the 65nm Core 2 Duos.

Oh, and you also have to bear in mind that many 65nm Core 2 Duos also have 2 MB of L2 cache.

The entire Core 2 Duo E4xxx series has 2 MB of L2 cache, and also the E6300 and E6400 also have 2MB of L2 cache.

The most popular 4 MB L2 cache CPU that people bought was the E6600. The E6700 cost around $500 when it was released and the X6800 cost in the region of $1000.

Fast forward to today and you can say that a Pentium Dual Core E5300 is faster than a Core 2 Duo E6400. You can read the review of the Pentium Dual Core E5300 at Anandtech.
