F1 2010 - Please teach me

So I finally picked up another driving game to play instead of NFS Shift, after playing F1 2010 I finally realize what everyone was complaining about with NFS Shift and its terrible handling. I have been playing and enjoying myself but it seems there is a ton I know nothing about, and since it was on steam, no book for me to read. Things like

1) How does one handle the R&D, it seems even when I hit the time they want I dont earn it.

2) when qualifying/doing the R&D time trials, can I set my time then go into the pits and skip to the next portion of the race (skip to qualifying/race) and still keep the times I put up, looks like the practice portion gives you an hour and there is no way I am sitting there until time runs out

3) How do I know when my team mate is going to pit? Yesterday a race was lost because I dropped in to pit halfway through the 12 lap race and my team mate was in my pit box, had to sit there and wait for him, then do my pit stop, ended up in last by the time I was out.

4) Please explain the rules, what in sam hell is illegal blocking? Illegal overtake? all sorts of strange rules, I am having enough issue learning to drive fast without any contact with the cars around me, playing the race like a chess match instead of a rugby game, now I am losing time and I dont even know why.

Anything else you picked up while playing that you think is worthwhile to pass along would be appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time!

1) I believe they give you the upgrades at the next track.
2) Once you achieve the goal you're fine to skip through the rest of the time.
3) Haven't had that one, not sure.
4) Illegal overtake generally highlights cutting a part of the track or corner to gain position.

Knowing the track well is probably your largest benefit. Also with all of the driving aids off the throttle is the main thing that will get you in trouble as far as spinning out, etc.

Thanks, what is illegal blocking? Throttle control has been big on learning how to play, I instinctively drive it in deep and try to power slide around, riding on rails, slowing down enough and riding the correct line every time has been my challenge, if I lose focus for even a second I end up defaulting to trying to powerslide and flying off the end of the track.

Slow in, fast out.
Cornering should be smooth.

Illegal blocking is more of intentionally blocking another car, generally flags you when you are significantly slower or holding up other cars. Not sure if this game implements the 'one blocking attempt/direction' rule that exists in F1, though.

1) Just complete the time, and the upgrade will be ready next race.

2) Yes, go one menu option to the right of your engineer in the pits.

3) I usually just pit when the engineer tells me to and I have never encountered this problem. Did you ignore his instructions?

4) Illegal blocking is quite hard to define, it usually happens to me when I've crashed and cars come up behind me. I think it means deliberately getting in other people's way. Illegal overtake - hmmmm not sure on this one. The only situations in F1 I can think of would be overtaking in the pit lane or cutting off a corner to overtake.

Hope this helps.

If you blatantly run into another car or run them off the road you can also get hit with an illegal overtake or a similar penalty as well.

Slower is faster in the mantra I have been going with

So just to be clear, I go to practice, I go to the engineer, I look at the R&D goal, I hit accept, I beat the time. I go into the pits, I skip to qualifying. Then the next race whatever upgrade will be automatically applied or do I need to go into a setting and pick it? Sorry, feeling noobish and the game has already frustrated seeing as the length I had to go to to get it to even recognize my driving force EX wheel

I absolutely ignored his instructions and pitted the next lap, but when I hit the "pit" button on my wheel and he said "ok we will be ready for you" I would have hoped that would have been true, or at least warn me that it probably isnt a good time...

Anyone know how to control the pits? i have just come to the realization that when I come in to pit they probably arent doing anything.

If you are new to F1 then the rules can seem tough to understand. Have a look at this for a idea what you can get a penalties for. If you want to read the full regulations for F1 and have a few hours spare, visit here.

Regarding R&D, the team's number one drive will get the new update first. Then the second drive should get it the following race.

Pit stops can win or loss races. The method that I used when playing the game on a PS3 was to do long runs in practice on the different tires to see how many laps I could do on a single set. Once I knew that, I adjusted the pit stop strategy to match. This also help in learning the track.

One thing that does make a huge difference is the setup of the car. This is a area that I spent a lot of time on. And as a result I became world champion in the first season.

When you use the monitor on top of the car, there is a way to fast forward the session time like 2x-4x-6x, maybe faster, I don't remember how though

If you're not driving all that fast and a car is coming up behind flat out, failure to out off the main racing line will get you a blocking penalty....or if you spin out and just can't get out of the way of a fast car in time...can get you a blocking penalty

in a race, watch for the blue flashing lights or flags, I think the time radio warns too, they mean move out of the way of a car that is lapping you

I have to look up how to see the teamates settings

This is the 1st racing game I owned since GT3 on PS2, loving it so far, not up to speed yet, or getting good results, I play on expert of course

but I had to crash on purpose at Monaco just to make sure the cars actually take more damage than losing the front wing

then I got as far as Montreal P2, and had to reformat

That's right, although I didn't realise about what Zeus said...if you are the team's second driver you won't get the upgrade for two races. Seems kind of harsh given you're the one that did the testing for them!
