Laptop runs hot on ubuntu 11.04

Thread Starter
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop (core 2 duo p8800, radeon HD 4650 1gb) and it's super hot (the CPU is at 71 C while browsing the internet). What should I try to fix this? It was around 40C in windows 7

how old is the lap top? Its probably got some dust in it if its a year old or more. May try taking it apart and cleaning it out. reapply thermal compound if needed.

It's two years old and I just cleaned it out about two months ago and replaced the factory thermal compound with some IC diamond (that was all I had lol)
I opened System Monitor and it shows that the CPU is at around 75% utilization! I guess that's why it's running so hot; what can I do to reduce the CPU usage?

Ok, go into a terminal and type "sudo top" and see what's using the CPU.

Also, you need to set the CPU governor to "ondemand" in power management settings

What graphics driver are you using? The open source Ati does not support power management and downclocking switching to the proprietary driver may fix this.

Ati drivers on linux are pretty pathetic... One of the reasons I will most likely never get an ATI card again.

Anyways, I think linux/ubuntu does some indexing stuff when you first run it. If it is down to 50 degrees, it should stay that way from now on given the same circumstances.
