Need good cpu cooling suggestions

I've got about 1500$ lined up and ready to build the best damn computer I can... 1500$ meaning parts, s/h, monitors, keyboard ect.... I'm not going for flashy, I'm going for performance. Don't care if it looks like rubber dog ****, as long as I get the best value for my $ is all that matters to me...

That being said I plan on overclocking that mofo to the best of my abilities... However I'm not sure what I need in terms of cooling and psus... Ill provide you with my newegg wish list (feel free to buy me something )

http://secure.newegg.ca/WishList/Pub...umber=16441065

What do you think of my case and psu? Will they be sufficient? Should I replace the case fans with better more expensive ones? And most importantly, what cpu cooler will best suit my build?

Also, how many GHz you think I can crank that baby up to? Keep in mind, I'd rather avoid paying 120$ in cooling when that money can be spent buying another core...

Many thanks,
Statues!

212+, n520 or a70 would be good for that setup

others have hit over 4.5 on a 2500k with 212+

Save youself 40 bucks and get a samsung spinpoint f3, its a little slower and much cheaper at the same storage capacity.

If you want performance, here's a build I'll throw up for under a 1500$ price tag:
MSI 870-G45 AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - 75$
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition - 115$
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 (In SLI, for 200$!)or 100$ for one.
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 2000 4GB (2x2GB) - Get two sets, for 8Gb's for 160$, or 80$ for 4GB's.
Rosewill RBR1000-M 1000W Power Supply - 130$
Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower, Or NZXT Phantom ATX Full Tower Case (I recommend the Phantom, Since NZXT is a Top of the line buy and their price is pretty cheap for what it takes to make it)
An SSD, Of your choice, I cannot give a recommendation, because I've never used a SSD...

There's for some parts, but The rest is up to you.
Hopefully this is a bang for the buck build, and should let you game to your wildest dreams. But, I'd also recommend getting Tri-SLI 8800GTX's.

No....just no.....
Not even gonna bother explaining why. Stick with your 6970 and your 2500k setup.

My mom's friend bought a 212+ and it kept an i7-920 nice and cool for a while while he was working on his w/c loop. He normally has it @4GHz, but put it down to ~3.5GHz and it maxed @~130

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm actually not that knowledgeable when it comes to hardware (beyond the obvious stuff). When I looked into it everyone said to go with the i5-2500k instead of phenom x6 1100T, so I think ill stick with intel atm. The n520 looks like a little bit of overkill, but I figure more is always better than less. This will definitely help me improve my rig!

If I wanted to oc the 6970, would I need a cooler for that too, or is the supplied one sufficient? I want crysis 2 at 45 fps
post #8 of 11
That card will do 45fps on crysis at your resolution no problem. As for overclocking, you dont need an aftermarket cooler to do it. As long as you dont go over 80c during full load. 90c is max for most video cards.

The heck am I reading?

Back to serious land . . . That 6970 is a great card but go with the MSI over XFX, everyone seems to have an XFX customer service horror story. Also if you want bang for your buck a 6950 or 2x 6870 are better value for performance. The 6970 only gives you a few more fps at the cost of more heat. The 560ti and 570 are great as well, and might perform better for single screen (they fall behind at multi-monitor res). Any of these should run Crysis 2 no problem.

I'm not crazy about that case either. I'd recommend something like the NZXT Phantom, SilverStone Raven 2, or CoolerMaster HAF 932 if you're looking for a full tower.

the 212+ is a better cooler than the n520, but the n520 is shorter and nearly silent ~20db vs ~30db
both should be $30 or less

check frys microcenter and newegg
