Howitzer Full Tower Aluminum Case

Thread Starter
Summer has rolled around, and I have a new rig, and I am designing a military themed Full Tower aluminum case. The planned dimensions will be 255w x 600h x 600d. The case will be partitioned into 3 sections: PSU and storage drive "Barrel" on the bottom, Cable "Shell" behind the motherboard tray, and the Motherboard "Chamber".

The tunnel will be cooled by 2 120mm fans blowing towards the CPU from the front. Design |PSU 220mm|cable route 20mm|HDs 150mm|fan 30mm|HDs 150mm|fan 30mm|. Port for air to PSU on bottom of chamber. each HD bay holds 3 drives.

There will be 5 5 1/4" drive bays, 4 standard HD bays and 3 SSD bays (undecided on cooling fan for HDs in this area). The motherboard tray will support ATX/EATX and will be removable. This will be designed so that the cable management is static in the case while the motherboard tray is dynamically removable with simply disconnecting the wires. Considering designing contact points to allow the motherboard tray to be removable without unplugging anything, but that will come a long time from now if ever. Modular expansion bay, from 5 to ? bays (no clue what the maximum slots on a motherboard is). All toolless design.

Between the right side panel and the motherboard tray will be sufficient room for cable management and additional radiator cooling via a protruding mesh fan casing.

The exterior colors are still under debate.

1mm aluminum sheets will be used for core structure, undecided on thickness for aesthetic design.

Update: Pictures of the cardboard rough draft (rough being quite literal)

Sorry the photos are in links, don't have a photobucket yet, would make one but as I was posting one of my friends described an appendix problem to me, so I have to run them to the hospital.

Update: After leaving the hospital I got to work on some 3D modeling of the case using Google Sketchup with a mm template. So far the design looks as such

The front shows 6 120mm fans, 5 5 1/4" Drive bays and 2 3 1/2" drive bays in a vertical orientation. The motherboard tray will slide in from the back, with the expansion slots / cards. I adjusted the height of the PSU area to allow options for a fan to circulate air directly up to the video card(s).

Sounds fun! Do you have any drawings, sketches, or renders of what you expect it to look like? Will it be hand made or cut on a CNC?

I have a diagram of the main chassis drawn up in paint with the dimensions, but it's 6000x6000 resolution lol. I'm working on a rough draft using cardboard, and am realizing now options that I didn't even think of when I first planned out the design. I'm sketching out a design for a rotatable PSU rack, the power cord would be routed through the rear of the case, and the cables would run directly to the right panel of the case. Also, with the width in my rough draft, I can have 5.25" and 3.5" drive bays side by side, which would offer tremendous airflow vs drive bay performance. With 3 5.25" and 4 3.5" drives in the main compartment, there will be sufficient room for 4 120mm intake fans in the Vitals chamber, and 2 120mm fans in the front and 2 120mm midway down the storage tunnel. I have a removable cardboard motherboard tray too lol.

I will post some pics of the rough draft in the next couple hours, when I feel the basic design is generally in place for comments / criticism.

Design is about 70% complete, but after a tool check I discovered my rotary tool is dead. Ordering a Black&Decker RTX-6 from amazon, hopefully it arrives before the designing is 100% complete.

I'm looking for a few unique ideas to implement into my case; what do you wish your case had / could do that you have not seen a case do before. Already designed a beer-cooling cup-holder using peltiers, watercooling and a single 120mm radiator push/pull. It's not a frosty -million degrees like phase change would do, but it keeps it a nice 43-47 depending how low we have our AC.

Cable management through the mobo tray and enough space behind for the cables.

Also, Filters... That thing will get damn dusty, i should know ive owned a HAF

and try for a nice big window.

My two cents, subbed

I've been looking at different materials for dust filters, and urethane foam looks like it's the way to go, washable and all. I'm definitely going with a nice big sidepanel window, with clear LED fans and a switch to toggle the LEDs on and off... I just need to find a relatively clear air filter for those fans, since I want to have an intake fan directly over my cpu... epiphany, nix side cpu fan, fab a shroud from one of the top fans to the cpu! Cable management will sort-of be through the mobo tray, I'm making it so the mobo tray can be removed without unrouting the cables, so there would be a slot cut in the mobo tray and the chassis wall will have the hole holding the cables, so you don't have to adjust them when re-inserting the tray.
