2nd Zotac GTX 480 Amp! Edition on the way...

Thread Starter
So been waiting for ages for my 2nd Zotac GTX 480 Amp! Edition to appear 2nd hand on eBay, finally won the bid for £210. But the other day I purchased a new motherboard to take the 2nd card and also have room for my Creative X-Fi sound card, but caught up in all the excitement I purchased as Asus P7P55D motherboard, which after installing and reading more in depth on the motherboard I discover it's not suitable for NVidia SLI... I managed to find a hack to resolve that but the 2nd PCIe slot is only 4x, so what does that mean exactly? Will be there be a big performance drop? If so I'll get the same board but the Evo version which supports SLI out the box, but that's another £114... What do you great guys here recommend.... Also I know I need a new PSU of 1000w, and my 3rd Acer 3D monitor... Then project complete.

You'll lose 5 - 10% due to bandwidth constraints, not worth spending the extra $$ imo - 1000w is way over kill, you can easily do with a quality 750w or if heavy overclocking 850w at most.

850w is good if your not overclocking them. Recently it was bought to my atttention by pioneerisloud and 'grunion' that an 480 SLI is good to run at stock on an 850w with a little headroom but not enough for an overclock on both cards.

I would say, personally, 850w is more than enough for 480 SLI but some will say it won't be.

I'd rather have more than I need for future proofing when I decide to buy new hardware. Plus the Zotac GTX480's are pretty power hungry. I have a 750w PSU now and know an 850w will be just about fine, so might as well just get that little bit extra just in case lol

I would worry about sandwiching your 480's together. That top card will get restricted/hot airflow. I would return that mobo and get find something that fits your cards with an extra slot in between for fresh air.
