My PSU just got noisy

My PSU just got noisy.
I wanted to make my main rig quieter. I added watercooling to the cpu and gpu and a fan controller. Everything was fine until it got a little warmer and I started folding with –bigadv. I’m pretty sure it has very little to do with the heat and more to do with the load that this folding client (it only works with a simulated 8 core set-up). With the psu fan running on low, I’m happy, but when it switches to high, it’s more noise than I want to deal with.

My question is will a higher wattage psu might end up being quieter?

.4GHz oc
125w cpu
1 140mm fans
7 120mm fans
1 dvd drive
1 hard drive
1 graphic card
I water pump

The higherwattage wont really make the noise less, Try getting TPQ-850 850W Modular SLI Silent PSU
post #3 of 13
Load = heat, they are not mutually exclusive. The rated output power doesn't directly correlate to noise generated - you'll have to look for a PSU specifically designed for quiet operation or look into replacing your PSU fan.

Are you 100% sure what you're hearing is the PSU fan?

To answer the question, there are definitely PSU's out there that could run your PC without ever becoming loud enough to hear it over the noise of your other fans/gear.

However, it's less a question of wattage than it is one of efficiency, and how the fan controller on the PSU is configured. As such, throwing a random, higher-wattage unit at the problem ... is not a logical course of action.

Generally-speaking, a higher-efficiency unit (80+ Silver or Gold) is going to produce less heat as a by-product. Hence, assuming the fan is well-configured for silence, such a unit should in theory run more quietly than your present Bronze-efficiency unit.

Pretty much anything built by Seasonic (whether the label on it actually says Seasonic or someone else, like Corsair) is very likely to be quieter than what you've got now. There's other brands and models that are known for quietness as well, but Seasonic is kinda 'famous' for it, and they're usually easy to find.

And you really don't need any more than 600W for that rig as it stands.

Yes. I can turn off all the other fans and that is where the noise is coming from. Yesterday, there was a power outage, so my rig was off when I got home. Before I got the folding client running again (~100% load on all cores), things were nice and quiet.

That's why I asked the question!

Thanks so much for the very clear answers. I got the current psu because my original one was old, might blow up at any moment, and ironically noisy (all the time). I'll move this psu to a less stressed rig and get something from the recommended list.

Anyone heard of this PSU? It's about $40 less than the Seasonic.

After looking at some information, the word mediocre was used quite a bit.

It's loud??? My EA650 is silent 24 hours a day, no matter what kind of load there is on it...

TPQ-850? Do you mean the Antec True Power Quattro 850W? **** that's the worst advice ever for "quiet." The True Power Quattro is EXTREMELY noisy under load.

Yep, my OCZ EliteXstream 800w is getting loud, thought about opening it up and putting a little sewing oil in the fan to quiet it down a bit, however it's still under warranty for about another year....so if I do that I void my warranty. thinking.gif
