Help me build a new rig

Thread Starter
Hi all. It has been awhile since I have been on here. Last time I was here, I requested some help in building a new rig. I received alot of great advice, but since then, new processors and other items have been released so I'm asking for any new opinions on this. I will be using the computer for the following with the highest priority items listed first: heavy photo editing, running multiple photo (and other) apps at one time for our photography business (Photoshop, Lightroom, Successware, Outlook, IE). I will also be gaming on this machine as much as I can. I like games with good gfx such as BFBC2. Also, this rig will be used for me to start learning overclocking. Last time I was on, people were suggesting using the AMD 1100t or 1055t. I planned on waiting for the new Bulldozer chips to come out, but I don't think I can wait another 3 months. I know the 2600k has been released since last I posted and I know at some point Intel will release something utilizing their new 3D transistor architecture but I'm guessing that won't be until at least the end of the end of the year. I would like to keep this build under $1,000. I'm looking for suggestions on all hardware necessary to build a functioning computer: cpu, mobo, ram, aftermarket cooler, case, hard drive, etc.

Thanks in advance to any gurus that can provide some guidance to this overclocking noob!

Note: Will also be doing HD video editing on this machine...

Thanks for the links Greek (great avatar by the way), but I'm looking for recommendations on individual components that I can put together myself. This will be the first time I have ever built a computer and am positive that if I build it myself, I can get it for less than $1,000.

I guess my first question comes down to the processor. Is a screaming 2600k or 2500k a better match for my needs or is the not quite as screaming 1100t or 1055t? We will be doing alot of multitasking. Perhaps I should post a poll about this....

Ok here's what I've got:

Case: NZXT M59

CPU: i5 2500k

Mobo: Asrock Extreme4 P67

Heatsink: Corsair H50

Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8GB

GPU: Sapphire 6950 1GB

PSU: Antec BP 550 watt

Dvd: Sony Sata DVD drive (cheap)

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB

Total: $999

So that's all I could squeeze in. Would be a beastly multitasker and photo editing machine and could munch through games easily. All of those parts overclock well. I hope you like it

I do like it! Thanks for the suggestions! Two quick questions: I posted another thread/poll and people are seeming to suggest the 2600k as the clear choice for my application. Thoughts on this? If you agree, how does that affect the components you suggested? I know the price is a bit more, but other than that....does anything else need to be changed? Also, I have alot of USB devices plugged into the cpu at any one time, will a 550w PSU be enough? Lastly, if I ever decided to buy two of the gfx cards, could they be crossfired/sli'd (forget which is which)? Thanks again for your suggestions.

The 2600k is what you call a true quad core with Hyper threading.

Check out this review.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i...-2600k-review/

Asrock Extreme4 P67
Supports ATI™ Quad CrossFireX™, 3-Way CrossFireX™ and CrossFireX™
Supports NVIDIA® Quad SLI™ and SLI™

3 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (PCIe 1 and 2 operate at x16 in single mode or x8/x8 in dual; PCIe 3 operates in x4 mode)

The psu seems to be of decent quality but for 2 cards I would opt for more Wattage. Nice single rail modular psu.

definitely stick with the 2600k for your applications because the HT will help a lot... also, you would majorly benefit from 16GBs of RAM... i will post my recommendation in a little bit, but i will go for photo editing first gaming second (as a good photo editing machine will generally game well)

In programs that use all of your cores hyperthreading can give you about a 20% boost in performance. I don't do any encoding or editing so I'll leave that to people with more experience, I simply think the 2500k is amazing power per $. If you really need the HT then drop the 6950 to a GTX 550 or HD 6870. Still the architecture of the 6950 is great for multiple programs (link).

As for the PSU it will be just enough for the original build. If you want to invest in a more powerful supply (not a bad idea) for future CFX/SLI, I'd recommend getting a 700w Corsair. The ASRock mobo is ready for the second card.

Happy shopping!

here is my recommendation... it is a little over at $1036.91, but will be an amazing machine for what you are doing (and wont struggle in prity much any game)

CPU: 2600k (279.99)
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0354587

RAM: 2x CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (84.99 ea)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-144-_-Product

Mobo: ASRock P67 EXTREME4 (B3) (116.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...229R-_-Product

PSU: Corsair CX600 (49.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-019-_-Product

HDD: 2TB WD green (79.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-514-_-Product

CPU cooler: hyper 212+ (39.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-065-_-Product

GPU: HIS 6950 2GB (249.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-368-_-Product

Case: Rosewill Destroyer (49.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ll%20destroyer

if you end up with extra money for this build, then i suggest either upgrading the PSU to this (99.99) or getting a second of the same GPU (4GBs of GPU RAM will destroy both picture and video editing)... also, i would recommend using the F3 in this system as a boot drive if you dont plan on keeping your old system running... also, you could use your 5770 for a little added power for rendering... i hope this helped

PS. a SSD is a waste of money for you... you would do much better with either more space or a second GPU

EDIT: Fixed spelling

EDIT2: forgot the case

Great suggestions, thanks everyone. I like to see there is some consensus regarding the cpu and the mobo. Do I really need the aftermarket cpu cooler? I have been reading that people are getting up to 4.2 on stock cooling? But then some say the stock cooler is garbage. This will be my first time OC'ing (and building a rig) a cpu so I'm guessing I will be more than happy with 4.2.
Eskamobob, thanks for taking the time to look all that up and post a recommendation. Why did you decide on the HIS brand 6950 as opposed to another brand?
Lastly, do you guys think this system will handle BF3???? I'm buying this for my wife's photography business....at least that is what I tell her...but I will definitely be gaming on it...
