ATTN: AMD to SB Converts - Page 6

1) Was the cost/hassle worth the jump?
Hands down, absolutely. I sold my old AMD gear for $275. My Sandy Bridge parts (had to buy DDR3) was $430. It took a few hours to build, and I even went through 2 boards until I was happy (first board was a cheapo). But yes, the cost was absolutely worth it for the increase in speed.

2) Did you receive noticeable performance gains? If so, in what applications?
Yes. I recieved noticeable performance gains in just about everything. Encoding time for videos and music was cut into 1/4 of what my AMD system took. Gaming, well we'll get there below. Even general snappiness of the system increased drastically. I've even been on the same Windows installation since I switched in the beginning of April (I used to reformat probably bi-monthly on the AMD setup due to sluggishness). I mean, just about everything is faster on the SB setup. And no, its not just "in my head" either, as benchmarks prove this point.

3) Any difference in gaming (at typical resolutions - 1080p/1200p)?
Night and day difference. I play a lot of Crysis, GTA IV, and BFBC2 (well not THAT much BFBC2). Source games also came out ahead too. Sometimes on L4D matches, I'd have slow downs into the high 40's when a large horde comes out. Now, it never drops below 300 (was about 200 with the same GPU). Just about every single game I play, went from playable with some drops, to super smooth 100+ FPS average, with minimums well over 60 (except Crysis and Metro). Even GTA IV...oh man. That went from high teens to low 20's as a low (when in the actual city), to it never drops below 50-60. I could NEVER go back to a current AMD system after being on this SB setup. Even with the same GPU or even more GPU power. I just couldn't do it.

For reference, my old AMD setup:
Athlon II x4 @ 3.85GHz, 1.57v (roughly comparable to a 3.80GHz Phenom II)
DFI LanParty DK 790FX
8GB (4x2GB) Kingston Hyper X DDR2-800 @ DDR2-1100, 5-5-5-15-2T
Northbridge was at 2750MHz

1) Was the cost/hassle worth the jump?
yes. i paid just as much for my new sandy bridge components (mobo, cpu, ram) as i did when i originally built my phenom 2 rig 2 years ago. the phenom 2 965BEs were ~200 when they hit the market

2) Did you receive noticeable performance gains? If so, in what applications?
yes. idk things just feel a lot snappier.

3) Any difference in gaming (at typical resolutions - 1080p/1200p)?

huge frame rate increase in SC2. BFBC2, still testing all my games.

I wouldn't do it now, personally because BD may bet better then SB and especially on price.

1) Was the cost/hassle worth the jump?

Definitely in my case. It allowed me to get full crossfire scaling in CPU intensive games.

2) Did you receive noticeable performance gains? If so, in what applications?

Only in multi monitor gaming. Most other applications there was negligable difference. You would see a much higher gain adding an SSD for said applications.

3) Any difference in gaming (at typical resolutions - 1080p/1200p)?

At typical resolutions there was not much difference, maybe a few FPS here or there. In a multi monitor situation I had my FPS double on CPU intensive games like Crysis.

1) Was the cost/hassle worth the jump?

Money wasn't a big issue for me, it didn't cost all that much to upgrade. Hassle wise, I did have to re-install Windows.

2) Did you receive noticeable performance gains? If so, in what applications?

Considerable performance gains, the desktop and programs seem snapier. It knocked over 3 hours off my Bluray encoding in Handbrake. Most games have between 10-20 FPS more then they used to.

3) Any difference in gaming (at typical resolutions - 1080p/1200p)?

Most games have between 10-20 FPS more then they used to. A game I play alot Shogun II used to be extremely choppy during battles, but runs smooth as silk now.

Upgraded from an AMD Athlon II X4 620 @3.1GHz

Thank you all for your opinions and input!

My 2500K is in it's socket just waiting for my 1055T to be swapped out.

I'm looking to run a couple benchmarks before I swap, though, so that I can put some numbers to the actual performance improvement.

What kind of benchies should I run?

BF:BC2 is a definite because of how much time I spend on my PC playing it.

Other than that, I was thinking:

Starcraft 2
SuperPi
Cinebench 11.5
3DM11
3DMVantage

...any other good ones?
