890 chipset and bios update making ram slower?

Thread Starter
So I am running a MSI 890gxm-g65 motherboard with 4gb(2x2) of 1600 ghz eco ram. While I was running the version 1.7 bios I had my ram set at 1666mhz at a voltage of 1.45V. Now with the new version 1.b (or 1.11) bios my ram will only run at 1600mhz. There is all the same options set as before in the 1.7 bios but now if I try to run my memory at 1666mhz it will only recognize 2gb even when I put the ram voltage all the way up to 1.6 V. Does anyone know if they added some new option in these "am3+ ready" bios updates that somehow effects my ram speeds? Should I just stay at these speeds or should I try and roll back to 1.7 bios?

Does it really matter? Its 66mhz difference. I don't even think you can personally notice the difference in any computing power at all. I would say just leave it alone. If getting that 66mhz is hardcore important, then just bios flash back to previous and reset you ram clock speed.

Feel a difference? A benchmark probably wouldn't even pick it up.

Well the main thing thats confusing me is that it still allows 1 stick to run at those faster speeds. I messed around with it some more and it seems anything over 1600mhz, even by 10 mhz, cause the system to only boot on 1 stick. I also dont have a black edition cpu so those 66mhz on the ram translate to about 500mhz that i can add on the cpu

well I rolled back to 1.9 bios and guess what??? my ram can now overclock past 1600mhz. I have decided that MSI is now a garbage motherboard manufacturer and look forward to telling everyone to avoid there products. AND NOT ONLY CAUSE OF THIS, for some reason the mobo cpu V is locked at 1.368 V. I set it to 1.4 and it does not adjust, i set it to anything in general and it does not adjust, *** is up with this garbage.

Next time go Gigabyte/Asus and be winning? Drink some tiger blood?

Glad you figured the problem out with the ram speed. It's really not a surprise. All manufacturers have Bios issues. I understand when you buy a top of the line board you expect it to work, but the reality is there are always going to be bugs and issues. Hope things go better with the next board you choose.
