Looking to jump ship to an Android phone

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I've been happily using an iPhone 3G for the past two years, but it has recently slowed down to a crawl. My contract with AT&T is about to end, so I'm looking at what option are available to me. I'm very interested in going with an Android powered phone this time around.

I'm open to sticking with AT&T or switching to Verizon, since I receive a bit of a discount through my employer for either company. 4G LTE is, unfortunately, not yet available in my area, so that's not really a factor in which company to go with. Signal strength is great for both carriers in my area as well.

Basically I'm just looking for the "best" Android phone I can get, regardless of the carrier, with no real budget in mind. I just want something that will be able to somewhat "keep up" for the next two years.
For AT&T, the Atrix look nice. If I switch to Verizon, the Droid Incredible 2 or Droid X2 seem like my best bets. The Galaxy S II also seems nice, but is not yet available here as far as I know. I haven't really looked into any other phones, but I'm open to anything really.

Which device do you guys recommend I go with?
AT&T: Motorola Atrix 4G, Samsung Infuse 4G, HTC Inspire 4G
Verizon: Samsung Droid Charge, Motorola Droid X2, HTC Thunderbolt
Sprint: Samsung Nexus S 4G, HTC EVO 3D, Motorola Photon 4G
T-Mobile: LG G2X, HTC Sensation 4G, HTC Google G2

Out of those, I'd recommend you wait around for the HTC Sensation, or a carrier version of the Galaxy S II. Best dual-core phones so far. If not, you can get an Atrix or Droid X2 and be done with it.

No on the Atrix. Its not 960x540 since its pentile. Do a side by side comparison with a regular 800x480 phone and the 800x480 will be way clearer. Add on to that a laggy UI and AT&T bloatware and its a definite pass. I wouldn't even trade my Desire for one.

Definitely go with the Droid Charge if you can. Same display as the SGS II. Don't worry about dual core, you won't notice it.

I can only recommend the Thunderbolt if planning on rooting. If not the battery life is horrid with sense and the verizon bloat.

That 2nd-init exploit might work out and the Atrix could potentially get custom ROMs. The Droid X is getting CM7 thanks to this hack. But yeah the PenTile display is pretty meh. The Charge and Infuse currently have the best screens since they have Super AMOLED+ panels.

Lol, that's funny I just jumped ship from android Galaxy s Captivate to a iPhone 4 and I love it. Galaxy models are the cream of the crop IMO for Android phones. If you can wait a bit they will be dropping the Galaxy S 2 soon. Benches show it dominating the iPhone 4. If I was sticking with Android I would look no further than a Samsung Galaxy phone they are really amazing, fast, and big screens.

HTC. They have the best build quality and HTC Sense is great out of the box if you don't plan to root.

Just went from a Samsung Captivate to an Inspire 4G and I love it. I do have it rooted(which I think should be mandatory! ), running CoreDroid with no bloat and awesome battery life. It's a quick, clean, solid looking phone that doesn't disappoint.

EDIT-

One of the main reasons why I did choose CoreDroid as my ROM is that it is Sense based. Sense is really intuitive and easy to use. And CoreDroid adds some other sweet tweaks! But the phone IS pretty damn awesome without rooting, though I didn't have mine that way for long, so I don't know about battery life.

I tend to agree rooting Android phones is a must to remove all the bloat garbage. I had a overclocked rom on my captivate and loved it. I like my new Apple more though simply because none of that stuff is needed. However, customization is not there by comparison.

What phones don't? 800MHz single-core with a mid-range gpu. Pretty much every non-budget Android phone on every carrier is faster.
