Tamron 17-50 VC

Thread Starter
Does anyone have this lens? I'm looking for an all around zoom lens to bring with me on vacation as my current lens collection consists of only prime lenses. Not really looking forward to swapping lens just to capture a shot

I know the EF-S 17-55 is an awesome lens.. but alas, I don't have the money for it right now

Also, got any ideas for a telephoto zoom that's ~$500?

If you can spring for it, get the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS. It's a lot sharper than the Tamron VC. The non-VC Tamron is sharper than the non-OS Sigma, though.

The non-VC has slightly better IQ than the VC version believe it or not. Photozone just reviewed both lenses (for Nikon, but it gives you an idea):

Yeah, it's not a huge difference. The VC version has softer corners, but both have excellent center sharpness. IMO, VC/IS/OS or whatever you want to call it isn't critical for a lens in that focal range.

Yep. I bet you could bring your body and snap some shots inside the store (I do that around here).

IS on normals might not be as absolutely critical, but they do come in handy when you are shooting at <1/30.

i would definitively get a IS verson over a non IS even if the IS is a bit soft.
