How is Sceptre? Looking at 40" LCD

Parents LCD stopped turning on after 4 years so looking for a new one for them. They don't need anything special (they barely even use HD channels). So I wasn't looking for a 'Tier 1' for them.

Found this Sceptre 40" for $348 over at Walmart (great for the 90 day return). How is it though? I know they used to have great monitors but unsure of how they are now or how their TVs were/are.

It looks like a decent HDTV, it a relatively new model came out in March it appears.
There's a thread on it on slickdeals [here]
Maybe there's one on display in store? Go in and look at picture quality next to the other sub-$400 TVs and see whats best.
It will probably work fine for your parents. I know mine don't see the difference between low end and high end TVs.
Can add 2-yr warranty on top for $35 more if concerned.

I found this while looking for reviews on that TV, thinking of getting either the Sceptre or the Apex 40" also from walmart which is $349 (we get the 10% discount).

We got one from the store but the picture quality isn't great in 720p (it's a 1080p Emerson HDTV). I was wondering if all 1080p look like crap when the signals comes in 720p or just this tv. (Shows perfect on my 24" 1080p LCD monitor with my tuner card).

Usually I look at user reviews and sort by Lowest rating to see what ppl have bad to say about each and they seemed to be around the same complaints, of course both TV ratings are very good 4 stars. The Sceptre has a bit better rating with double the amount of reviews.

I forgot to say, if you read about the bad reviews on the Sceptre, there is a few "DoA" or dead after an hour or day.. but nothing below 4 stars say anything about bad picture or sound.

I read 2 or 3 "The sound could be better" in the 4 stars reviews but if you just hook it up to a surround sound you should be fine, I'm going to be ordering mine tonight

A couple things I have noticed with Sceptres (I spent about 2 months looking for a HDTV in additon to working at Sears for a year)

1. They provide decent visual quality, however they typically have worse than average black/white contrast.

2.Reliability is questionable. Many have had their Sceptres running for a few years without any problems; but from my experience working at Sears: More people return Sceptres than any other brand by far.

3. Fewer HDMI ports and the sound quality is terrible. Remote sensor is also below average.

I got it for the parents so I don't think they will notice the contrast, or even the sound quality... They still watch mostly everything in the SD channels and not HD.

I'm worried about reliability as I remember Sceptre used to be quite good (for monitors at least) but haven't heard much of them lately. The current TV died after 4 years which I consider decent for a Tier 2 TV (given the price). Walmart does have a 90 return policy so if any issues come up, should be able to catch it.
