The zalman base should have one of the best gold platings u can get.
It should only be second to koolances' gold base.
And im seeing very heavy corrosion on the gold which isnt possible.
Sadly only the ZM-WB4 and older series were gold plated. I believe the ZM-WB5 / WB5 Plus were nickle plated, although I am having a hard time finding a conclusive answer to that. Basically the older blocks were meant for use with the Reserator, therefore the CPU block base was the only copper component so it made sense to gold plate it. When the Reserator 2 came along it had copper components inside the rad so they ditched the gold plating on the blocks as it would not really help in that case. They then started to bundle the non-gold plated blocks and some corrosion inhibitor with the Reserator 1's, presumably because it was cheaper for them.
I don't have a good closeup of the base, and I can't get you one as the attic it is in is about 4500 miles away in the UK. This is the best one I have from part way through cleaning, but it really doesn't show much:
Incidentally, you can just about make out in the background what replaced this block.
Any blue residue in the pictures is leftover coolant which I hadn't quite finished cleaning out. The coolant was used exactly as the instructions stated, so there should have been no problem there. Maybe it is a poor corrosion inhibitor, maybe I just got unlucky or the conditions in my loop were somehow worse than in windfire's loop, but what you see is what I got.
