What to buy? GTX 570 Superclocked vs HD 6970

Hey guys,

I just sold my 2xHD5870's. I did not require so much of power and the amount of heat. I can only game in summer. I am looking for a good card to replace the old ones. Currently the GTX 570 SC and the HD 6970 fit my price range. I have a 120Hz Asus monitor and I know that the HD 5800's were not meant to do 120Hz especially in CFX (read the manuals and they went up to 85Hz). I am going to run 1 card only and I don't plan to do SLI/CrossfireX in the future. I know the new GTX 570's can do 120Hz (for 3d) no problem but I heard some users had problems with the HD 6970's especially @ 120Hz. I am just looking for some opinions and please send me some benchmarks. My friend recommends the GTX 570 SC as it performs within 90-92% of the GTX 580. I am going to buy from CanadaComputers since I live not too far from it. NCIX is also an option or any canadian reseller that ships for free/reasonable price to Toronto.

Please tell me your thoughts/opinions

EDIT: Playing at 1920X1080 and do not plan to get extra monitors

Personally, even though I'm a fan of Nvidia.
I'd go with the 6970.

6970 was faster in : F1 2010, 3dmark 2011 professional

the 570 won in : Bad company 2, Black ops and hawx

personally i think they had a driver problem in hawx.

Crysis warhead was a tie.

I think the 570 sc is faster at 1920 x 1080 res but the 6970 will pull way ahead at very high resolutions

this website seemed to favor the 6970. so they both seem pretty equal. personally i just picked up some 6970s because of the performance at high res, the have a backplate installed(if you really car about looks like I do smile.gif ) and eyefinity

If you're using a 120hz screen with any plans to actually do 3d, definitely go nvidia. I'm planning to upgrade shortly and faced a similar dilemma (although I have two Alienware 120hz screens, so needed the dual dual-link dvis), although I've decided to go with a 3gb gtx 580 for future sli and surround screen gaming, with maybe some 3d for gimmick factor.

Also keep in mind the 6000 series only has one dual link dvi as opposed to the two of the 5000 series, although given the fact you don't plan on adding an additional screen shouldn't be an issue.

Got a mate who recently got one of the Gainward GLH 570s and he's loving it!

Thanks a lot guys, I am getting the GTX 570 Superclocked. Too bad the store doesn't have the SSC or the FTW frown.gif.

They pretty much win/lose depending on the game, if you get 570, get a non-ref (ASUS directCU II, Palit Sonic, or MSI lightning III) for beefed up vrms, however, ref can still overclock well (got my ref to 895 core 1.1V 24/7 stable)

Hey Durdle Class A, does the MSI lightning come OC'd?

I dont believe the gtx 570 has a lightning edition. It has a twin frozer which is overclocked slightly. 750, 1500 from stock 732, 1464.
