Adding extra HDDs

Thread Starter
Can I put extra HDD's along with my boot drive? I have a 2x 1TB HDD in raid 0 i'm using for windows. Can I just put in extra HDD's and connect them via sata? Would windows recognize them even though windows isn't installed on it? Currently I'm using an HDD enclosure via e-sata. I'm wondering if I could just put the extra drives along with the HDD i'm using for windows or would I have to keep using the enclosure? And the limit for bios is like 2 TB right?

Sorry if I'm not all that clear. I'm still a noob about HDDs.

You should be fine. I'm assuming if nothing is on them, then you would have to format them in Computer Management in Windows.

But the limit for the newer boards with the EFI BIOS is 3TB's.

You can add a HDD no matter what is on it. Your system won't boot from that drive unless you set it to in the BIOS.

It will just show up as another storage device and be assigned a letter. It would be no different than using it while connected with your external enclosure.

true but some bios's might move that harddrive up in the boot sequence by default depending on the mother board right?

I've never seen that, but it wouldn't matter if that did happen.

It would be pretty obvious because nothing would boot. You would probably get a blank screen with a blinking underscore or an error message saying no OS found.

Just reboot into the BIOS, change it back, and done. You could always check the BIOS first boot after installing the drive as well.
