I'm probably the only person who doesn't mind GFWL frown.gif Live Achievements are actually worth pursuing. The ones on Steam are boring and useless because there's no point value to them.
There's no value to GFWL achievements either. It's just e-peen, and nobody worth knowing even remotely cares about e-peen.

But that said. I don't get the bloatware title people give it. It's fine and once installed and setup it's out of the way.
Okay...lemme try to spell out why I think it's bloatware.

1: It hides your save games in hidden folders deeeeep within the Windows installation. You can't easily back them up. Damnit I've been gaming for fifteen years, I shouldn't need a tutorial to find my save games!
2: It does the same exact thing to DLC.
3: It interferes with modding. I have to disable it on Fallout 3 and GTA IV to get my mods to work properly.
4: It serves no point. Steam is able to do much more than just track achievements and handle multiplayer.
5: Steam is actually useful. Steam doesn't hide your saves, hell it doesn't do anything with them. DLC is stored in the game's folder. It has a nifty in-game web browser, it comes with text and voice chat accessible both in and out of game, it can launch games not downloaded through it complete with all the perks of the overlay, it's resource light, it doesn't get in the way of modding, and Valve are a pretty nice bunch who actually genuinely care about their honest customers.

I actually love GFWL. But that's because I've had my Xbox Live account for close to 6 years, and I like the ability to get achievements while playing and communicating with my LIVE friends while playing PC games. And I've also never had any problems with it, AT ALL.

Plus GFWL doesn't auto-update all the time...I think it was Fall Out3 (?) that I spent a decent amount of time messing with crap and it turned out that the entire problem was that GFWL was the incorrect version. The error it gave me didn't hint at it in any way. Every time i install it I have to manually install the newest version. I don't even have to log in to play...I don't have a login registered for it at all.

So true... It's ridicules how plain stupid menus and configurations on PC can get, I can't understand it at all, I mean, it really is very simple to do it at least decently and yet here comes Dungeon Siege III..

The GFWL achievements contribute to Gamerscore, which I personally like better than achievements not having a value. I feel the same way about the PS3 achievements. It means if the game has 1000 points to collect via achievements I have something to aim for.

1. Fair enough. Never noticed, to be honest.
2. Again, never noticed. Not a huge fan of DLC.
3. Not modded any games myself. My crappy internet connection limits me frown.gif
4. To you, no, it serves no point. To me, I can chat with my XBL friends in game. I like that.
5. I don't know why you're mentioning Steam so much. Steam is pretty decent. You don't need to sell it to me. But also, imho, it's not as great as everyone heralds. I can't lift a game from my account and give it away, that bothers me.

I don't know why you took such major offence to that. I quite like GFWL and I don't find it too intrusive. Didn't know about the games saves folder thing, though. Thanks for that heads up cause I'm going to reinstall soon. I still don't understand your bloatware title, but if it's going to cause another aggravated response then please forget I said anything!

The only one I disagree with is the save points. With the ability to save on a whim, challenge is diluted. I'm no angel in this regard...when I played Baldur's Gate, particularly difficult areas were handled by save...draw one or two monsters...kill...save...repeat. Hardly sporting, and I take no pride in it...but we all do it, and we all know we do it.

The first PC game I ever played that had "save points" in a way was the original Dark Forces, and I thought it was challenging on a whole different level than Doom was for that reason. I was never rash, because rashness led to redoing more of a level than you wanted to redo.

Not arguing that save points should be in every game, mind you...just saying that save points should not be considered "bad" just because this is a PC, not a console.

Not true, achievements are a psychological hook that appeals to a LOT of gamers. I love collecting achievements, at least the ones that are reasonably attainable.

No, my only problem with GFWL is that it is just a poorly supported POS. I have owned two, exactly two, GFWL games. And for both of them it took me an hour to get the stupid thing to just start, all because of GFWL. Okay, maybe it didn't take me an hour to get Bioshock 2 working; but that's only because after spending an hour with Arkhan Asylum, I knew to suspect trouble out of GFWL before I ever installed.

So I would probably change this guy's complaint from "everything but Steam is bad" to "if you're going to use something other than Steam, it had better work as well as Steam every frickin time". GFWL falls well short of that mark.

As opposed to playing games to have fun, to unwind, to relax, to blow stuff up?

I'm not either...normally. But I bought the DLC for Fallout 3, which had to be done by GFWL, and that annoyed me.

doesn't matter. There's plenty of mods that will download just fine over dialup. It never kept me out of the loop.

I hate GFWL is all. It's never once done me anything good, always annoying me some way or another. These days if I get a title with GFWL the first thing I do before isntalling it is find a GFWL delete.

I completely agree with you. Asides from the points you mentioned, another reason I like save points is they remind me of classic gaming, back when you HAD to save via save points and had no other option.

Nostalgia, I guess.
