thanks for the clarity, as you probably have guessed, I haven't done this before, last time i built a computer was when i was 12 back when 500MB memory was the ****, But if you are running 3 way SLI or 3 way crossfire, does each gpu handle each monitor output if say you wanted to connect three monitors?

I know in dual SLi, two monitors are controlled by one card, and the other card controls the last one in a three monitor setup.
Each frame is rendered by each card, so technically, the 6970's would be faster. But at "1080p 2560x1600 (wut?)*, the extra 1Gb on the 580's will be beneficial above having another card. And scaling isn't perfect, there may be more latency with triple-cards. Each card doesn't control each monitor. Card 1 renders frame 1, card 2 frame 2, so on. But the first card is the only actual output. At least how I understand it. I may be dead wrong, I've never gone multi-GPU.

Do you have 1080p monitors (1920x1080) or 30" (2560x1600)?

The extra vram of 3g 580s would help in the case of AA on 30 inch monitors. Either way, your better off with 6970's.

Fixed.

Get three 6970's, in essence it's the same as the 6990+6970, which easily beats the SLI GTX 580's. As far as VRAM, 2GB is plenty.

Not really, 6990 has 4Gb TOTAL, with 2Gb usable to each GPU. As in the case of 6970 Trifire, there is still only 2Gb total available, as VRAM doesn't add up.
