The three 6970's can be had for the price of two 580's which is why they are such an excellent price/performance balance. Don't get me wrong, the 580 is one hell of a card (not so much the 590 haha), and 580's in SLI reign supreme for dual GPU configs.

However, even on my little TN panels at 5760X1080 I never see 2GB of VRAM usage that I can think of off the top of my head. 3GB is fantastic no argument, but I think at the current development of gaming titles it's a little overkill. Granted I do not have X1600 resolution for my three panels and that may chew through his VRAM but it will also eat FPS, which is why I feel the 6970's represent the best solution.
I think there was actually a benchmark comparing VRAM usage where Crysis used 2140MB of VRAM , so basically, 2GB is fine for anything if Crysis only uses an extra 100MB.

EDIT: Majin SSJ: I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy here, but there is the PhysX hack for AMD cards, it's probably very inefficient though.

3dMark11 shows that the 6970 is no slouch in tesselation. Games like HAWX 2 make it look like a bigger difference than it really is, but that's another story for another thread

1) 2x580 will push 3x1080p just fine, but will choke on 3x1600p.
2) 3x6970 will push 1080p better, but will VRAM choke on 3x1600p (unless no AA).

Get 3x6970 if you care about money or get 3x580 is you don't care about $/perf @ 3x1080p/1200p. Really you need 4 GPUs and at least 3Gb of VRAM if you want to get smooth 3x1600p with AA.

Of course if you fold or spend a lot of time playing games with use physX you should go Nvidia.

At those resolutions he won't even need AA, AA is basically just "fake resolution".

When you say choke on 3x1600p, I assume it is not a VRAM choke correct, could you be specific about what kind of bottleneck I would reach there, and lets say I got a third 580 later on, would that remove the bottleneck at 3x1600p?

Vram will be fine. I mean those 2x580s @ 3x1600 will not have enough GPU horsepower. However, if you get a third (or forth ) you will be fine

He doesn't mean a VRAM choke, you will probably run into other chokes. But 3x1600p is an insane resolution, so it does require the GPUs VRAM to store a LOT of information. Like I said, you should be able to get around the VRAM choking if you run without or with very little AA, but to be honest, you won't even need AA at those resolutions.

Agreed. There will always be more factors than X is better than Y in most cases. However that was not the OP's question.

Hmm. May need to boot up warhead and see what it actually utilizes. Honestly though my FPS dropped before I hit that much VRAM usage I thought. Which is why I was arguing the 6970 is a better price/performance/eyecandy ratio. While I don't doubt that we will see games in the future that utilize more than even 3GB of VRAM, I don't see it becoming common within the next couple of years. As such I feel the 6970's were the better value.

? Di you have a link showing VRAM usage vs framerate at those resolutions?

EDIT: misunderstood you.

3x 1600p isn't a 2gb vs 3gb RAM issue, it's just a LOT of horsepower necessary. I still vote 3x 1200 and 3x 6970 for the smoothest experience with the most eye candy turned on.
