Build Advice

Thread Starter
Hello one and all, relatively new here, and wanted a comment on a build I'm planning to do in a bit over a month's time.

I already own a number of the parts I will be using, these are:

Case: Lancool PC-K62
PSU: HX-650
ODD: Samsung Blu-Ray Combo
HDD: Have a number of usable ones already, but will be using a Momentus XT before picking up a SSD later

The new parts I will be getting, with prices are:

Mobo: Gigabyte GZ-Z68-UD3R-B3 $189.00
CPU: i5 2500k $219.00
Cooler: Corsair H60 $109.00
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb 1600mhz $115.00
GPU: Gainward GTX 580 3gb Phantom $629.00
Network: Asus Wirless PC-E Card $39.00

Total: $1300.00

Be aware I am using Australian prices according to www.pccasegear.com

I understand that, in a single gpu and single monitor gaming set up the 3gb card is overkill, but I'm planning on eventually sli'ing and triple screening with 120hz, so I don't want to limit myself, otherwise I would probably go with a gtx 570.

Something I have been umming and ahhing over is getting a 2600k. Will there be any 'future proofing' (horrible term, yes) in going with one, or will the 2500k stand me in good stead?

I will be using the PC for predominantly gaming, word processing, music encoding. Looking forward to a giant leap from my sig rig, especially in terms of minimum frame rates in games, and frame rates in general I would be planning on overclocking the cpu, although probably not the gpu...

Have I made good choices? Any suggestions of considerably better alternatives? I chose the Gigabyte board because it seemed to have good specs and... I'm going for an all black scheme inside my case... silly I know, but would be nice

Should have mentioned that if I go with the 2600k, I will probably drop the cooler for a while...

I am also not going with an AMD card because the new gen doesn't support dual dl-dvi, which I need for my current monitors.

The 2500K should be more than enough, especially if you are just gaming. Also, maybe swap out the Corsair Vengeance for some G.Skill Ripjaws X, and also swap out the Corsair H60 for a premium air cooler such as the Thermalright Silver arrow or Noctua NH-D14...

Roughly how much music encoding will you be doing? Because between the 2500k and 2600k there are only a few gaming differences. The i7 should be purchased if you're going to be doing a lot of encoding and editing where hyper-threading can be utilised. Otherwise, the 2500k should be fine for you, and it's a great chip if you want to overclock. Water-cool that thing and you'll easily reach 5GHz.
the 2600k will not be of any real advantage stick with the 2500k especially if going for the 2600k would leave you on stock cooling, you'd loose more in overclock than hyperthreading would ever give you even on heavily threaded applications.

Regarding 120hz tripple screen, depending on the games you play you may find that duel 580's is a little overkill as you will most likely hit trouble with vram limitations before the raw power causes you any issues. it also may be worth considering that for the price of one 580 you can almost get 2 570's, not sure how hard it is to get hold of the 3gb 570's in aus but they do exist.

If you are planning to sli 580's then it may be worth considering a slightly larger PSU 650w should just about work but it would be pretty marginal. 750/800w should be plenty.

Would also be tempted to advise you to wait just a little longer and see what bulldozer has to offer, its so close now hopefully the performance will be brutal but regardless i expect it to knock a few $ of the price of intels offerings.

Regardless I think you will be very happy with the upgrade

I rip a lot of CDs, at one point I would be buying about three a week. Besides that, not a whole lot. From what I've read and what you guys are saying, on the whole, the 2500k is more than adequate.

Will air cooling give me better cooling than the h60? I'll be looking at around a 4.5ghz overclock and want to keep temps and noise as low as possible. I have a mate with a h70 who said it was too big for a mid tower chassis, although my fans are in different locations to his, and that's why I went for the h60.

I guess I don't necessarily want the biggest and the best, I just want the best for me, although it's good when the two coincide Also, what impact is there in using 1600mhz RAM instead of 1333mhz? Will there be a huge difference? If not I might go with some ripjaws x 1333mhz RAM (fits in with the black theme, lol). I guess I was going with the corsair as I they fit in with the general theme I want and I've heard good things about corsair RAM.

I don't have a budget per se, but the less I can spend the better!

Really? Would run into problems with 3gb? Wow... I guess it's better than 1.5gb though Unfortunately I haven't been able to find 3gb versions of the gtx 570, otherwise I'd definitely go with that. I guess, for the most part, triple screen 3d game play would be purely for show off factor, although I'm an avid Bat fan and would appreciate being able to do it for the upcoming Arkham City and its predecessor. Usually it would just be triple screens without 3d. I already have two 120hz screens, so don't really want to 'downgrade' to 60hz

Yeah, planning on upgrading the PSU before the SLI to a HX-1000. Thanks for the reminder though!

Man, this place is amazing...

I think Sandybridge CPUs can reach 4.5GHz on air, but to go further you need watercooling.

It honestly depends on how far you want to push things like AA and AF lowering or removing them on tripple screens you should be fine with 1.5gb of ram, the problem comes when you start cranking those up they realy munch it at a horrible rate and obviously 3d uses allot too.

if you only realy want 3screens for showing off i wouldnt bother, and batman arkahm asylam was built with the unreal 3 engine, so I imagine the 5760x1080 support is non existant, it is in most U3 games. the new one will most likely use the same engine.

In terms of temps etc high quality air coolers are on a par with water to be honest these days, you can maintain a 24/7 5ghz 2500k on something like a noctua d14 easily enough if your case has decent airflow and a decent chip.

1600mhz ram is very much the same price as 1333 and you will see the differenct, going more than 1600 though is pretty much pointless as the price you pay for the performance gain becomes pretty painfull
