Another victim of the Win7 failed upgrade loop!!

I was stupid. That's a good place to start. I attempted to use a Win7 Ultimate .ISO disk to upgrade from Vista (I was desperate!) on my HP G60 notebook. This is how the tragedy unfolded:

1. I used a virtual clone drive to run the .ISO from inside Vista.

2. I chose to upgrade INSTEAD of clean install.

3. To keep the stupid going, I chose NOT to back up my files.

Everything was fine until I got that msg: upgrade did not install, restoring previous OS (not those exact words but you understand). Like many other people, my system then gets caught in the fail/restart/fail loop.

After MUCh research, I d/l IMGBURN and burned a bootable copy of Win7 but when I tried to boot system with it I got msg: can not boot from disk code5. After reading another forum that said the problem is in my motherboard, I used the boot.img from VLite to create ANOTHER bootable Win7 disk. This time it gives error: MISSING OPERATING SYSTEM

Sooo...I can't access Windows RE, can't boot from any .ISO, Can't get a command prompt (although I'm not sure what to do if I could), can't install any Windows OS, can't repair with a Vista repair disk....can't do ANYTHING!!

I do have a lot of important files on my system and I would love to keep them if possible but at this point if I can just make anything happen other then another error msg I would be jumping for joy!!! Can ANYBODY help me??

Remove hard drive, mount on another PC as a SECONDARY drive, back-up copy files (and look to what extent the damage is) Reformat, return to Laptop and install windows 7, use clean install.

Assuming you know how to move Hard drives to different PCs and assuming you have an extra PC to use.

^^ what he said said. You need the "other" PC to access your HDD's so you can get your data of em. Then you need it wipe the "said" HDD/s

This is what happens when you pirate. (My apologies if it wasn't) But the majority of ISO cracked images are garbage. Also anyone know that's when you do a clean install there will ALWAYS be a window.old file under your boot drive with all your previous information. You can hand pick and get what you want back unless you had a backup drive running consistently for you to pick a restore point from.

Just food for thought sir. Hope your day gets better.

As said before , mount the hard drive as secondary and backup all the needed information on it.

regarding the older information , its true its still there but its not relevant for you

Thanks guys for the help!! I should be able to move the hard drive and save my data (thank God, Gerickjohn, Morphus1, Profit8652, and Zorg1983) but how do I format the drive once I've backed up my info? They took away the f/disk option with Vista, rite?

you can do it thru the install or use killdisk/application

Wait a sec, you mounted the ISO within Vista to do a clean install of W7?? LOL

What did you think was going to happen, should of burned the ISO to a disk.

Once you backup just pop in the disk, boot from it and follow the screens. Formating can be done from there.

I will admit to doing some pretty stupid things but I at least knew I couldn't do that ErOR. lol. I tried to do an UPGRADE thru Vista. The ISO was burned to disk...the problem I ran into (or should I say one of the MANY problems) was that the pirated WIN7 copy (see, I told you I can do so pretty stupid things) I was using was from a certain chipset that my system couldn't read. I mounted the ISO on a virtual drive and tried to do the upgrade thru Vista. BAAADDD IDEA!!

Either way, again, I wanna say thanks to MORPHUS1 for the help. Everything came out perfectly - I retrieved my old data, wiped the drive, and did a clean install. I'm back up and running - you guys are the BEST!!! ;-)
