New Case - Which fan should push, and which should pull

Thread Starter
I posted in a different thread and I had this question in it among several others. I didn't notice the "cooling" forum on here, so I figured I'd repost my cooling question here from my original.

I'll start out with my specs for my new system:

Case: Cooler Master HAF X 942
MoBo: Asus Maximus IV Extreme
CPU: i7 2600k
RAM: 3 x 4gb Dominator GT DDR3 2000mhz PC3 16000

So, with this case, I went a head and bought some new fans to replace the stock ones in it. I've purchased 3 Antec Big Boy 200mm fans (1 for the side, 2 for the top), and 1 bgear b-blaster 140mm fan for the back. I'm also using the AirFlow dual fan module for the ram. Along with that I am purchasing the AirFlow Pro addon (both made for corsair if you need to look up what they are)

Question is as of right now I'm going to use Corsair H70 for my cooling on the cpu. I'm planning on OC'ing it to around 4.6ghz-4.8ghz every day use. With that configuration, what set up would I get the most optimal air flow to reduce heat the most out of my fans? Which ones should I set as in take and which ones should I set as exhaust?

Also, there have been some comments on getting the D14 or Silver Arrow heat sink. Ok, all fine and what not, but will either one of those fit in my case and allow me to keep the fan module and airflow pro addon or are they so big, I'd have to sacrifice it?

Thanks,

Michael

You have an H70. So build your rig. Unless you haven't opened the H70's box.

The question about the side panel fan and the heatsink: Does the side panel fan extend beyond Slot 1? If it does it will likely interfere with any full tower wide heatsink like the SA, the D14, the Archon, the Armageddon, and others.

What I like about the HAF X is that there are two 200mm fan positions on the top. This allows for the front fan to be used for top intake to feed fresh air to a heatsink. In that setup you leave the rear position covered. You can see from the graph on this page that with a 200mm fan in top exhaust the cpu temp is not the greatest:

But with the H70 none of that will matter: the HAF X will simply be a box the H70 is attached to. Airflow will not really matter.

H70 performs far better if outside air is intaken rather than the fan/s blowing out.

nah, this entire system is sitting in my cart on newegg and i'm ordering it here in about a week or so.

The HAF X has that great 200mm fan on the side with the duct and also gives the ability to attach an 80mm fan in which both of these work together on blowing air directly on my two video cards.

So then the question remains, if I got a D14 or Silver Arrow, would I will have enough room to use the dual AirFlow cooling fans and AirFlow Pro addon or is either of those huge heat sinks going to take up all the room that I can't have that for my RAM?

I read your posts and saw your pictures of covering the top back fan and using the front for intake. I get it. If I did that, why couldn't I just set both top fans for intake? Seems like a waste to not use all of my fan positions.

(hopefully all of this makes senses... I'm throwing a lot of different questions out all at once, sorry... but rumor has it you're the air cooling expert ehume).

Sometimes you get too much of a good thing. I look to create a wind tunnel effect. I suspect that the rear intake would spoil it. However, if you end up with an extra 200mm fan, try it yourself. Compare temps and report your results. Fact beats theory every time.

But the question still remains. If I go with a D14 or silver arrow, will I still have room for the fans for my ram?

Why do you need fans for your RAM? Are they 2v sticks? Higher? If they're no more than 1.65v, simple low profile generic heatsinks will do on the closest stick or two. If you want to use ego combs and RAM fans you will need to use an Armageddon or an Archon. Normal tower coolers won't fit.

Well, I plan on doing some OC of the ram too. You don't think I need to worry about the heating of my sticks? By replacing the H70 and getting either the D14 or silver arrow, in which I'm assuming i'm giving up the airflow fans for the ram, i'll get better over all cooling of my case and components?

Right now I have a Q9650 with an H50 inside my Cooler Master HAF X, and with 100% load I'm hit around 45-47 degrees Celsius. (Then again, it's not OC'd, mainly because any time I try and do any OC'ing on it, it never works... I'm very new to overclocking).

I see video's and what not of people idling at 25 degrees celsius... I would love to be down there. I am idling right now (with my room being at 70 degree's Fahrenheit):

Core 0: 38 Celsius
Core 1: 37 Celsius
Core 2: 35 Celsius
Core 3: 39 Celsius

I just want optimal cooling with ideal OC.

Overclocking RAM gets you only a little performance boost. In any case, you can't push past 1.65v anyway. So just unscrew the ego combs from the sticks that are under the front push fan of whatever cooler you get. You'll be fine.

Ok, so no fan for ram. Shouldn't be a problem since they are right under one of the 200mm fan slots.

Now I've heard the 200mm fans are kind of poor quality that come stock in the HAF X. I ordered 3x Antec BigBoy 200mm's, but fate have it, they don't fit. Weird shape. What, in your opinion Ehume, is a great 200mm fan I can get for this case?

Also, Speaking hypothetically, I drop a NH-D14 in here instead of the H-70. Here's what I"m thinking for my fans:

Intake:
HDD 200mm Fan
Side Case 200mm Fan
Top front 200mm Fan

Exhaust:
Back 140mm Fan
Top back 200mm Fan
(With the NH-D14 pushing towards the back exhaust.

What do you think (I know you're a fan of covering up/blocking the top back, but I can't see why it'd benefit to use not a fan one way or another).
