4870 Poor X-Fire ..

So I finally got a second 4870, made sure it worked by itself (bought it used). And it worked fine. Last night I put both of my cards in my loop and slapped the X-Fire bride on them and irremediably had problems. First it wouldn't boot just got into the windows loading screen and stopped, after a restart it got into windows and froze and the screen went black (no output).

Then I reset the cmos and put everything back to stock and after a few min. of playing with windows recovery I finally got it too boot. I reloaded the drivers for the cards checked CCC and its has X-Fire enabled but when I run GPU tool to test stability before starting to OC I get artifacts on stock settings and really poor frame rate.

On a single card I would get about 155 FPS on the tool stability checker, after the X-Fire setup I was only seeing 125 and artifacts. Then the screen started to stutter in just windows. I restarted again and tried to play metro 2033 and It was terrible, on a single card OC'd I could get about 55fps walking around and after it was down to about 22.

I think its some kind of driver issue, temps looked good in the 30s. Any idea what to try?

Have you tried a full driver sweep and reinstall? What driver version are you running? Have you tried older drivers? I'm using the 10.4a preview drivers myself.

I experienced similar issues the first time I tried crossfire. What did the trick for me was to install the drivers without CCC (run the driver installer and cancel it after it has extracted files, then open device manager and use it to install the drivers from the extracted folder).

I have changed motherboards and card configurations several times sand haven't had a problem with this approach. You can use MSI Afterburner for overclocks.

I will give that a shot.

Where can I get legacy drivers?

So, I tried that approach and I am back in windows and as far as I can tell the drivers are in (although on each card while installing it gave me a black screen, then restarted)

Do you not run CCC? Or can I now install that? Or should I just test this and see how it is?

Edit: Started GPU tool and got about the same as before 155 or so FPS so I tried metro, the video really stuttered during the into (And at some point I have lost sound) but in game I was getting over 100FPS, but it seemed jittery and not smooth.

List of older drivers. Try experimenting with different versions, 10.5 might be a good start... I don't have Metro 2033, so I can't comment on which ones work well with that game.

Crossfire on the 4xxx series card was known to be a bit jittery but I haven't experienced it much myself. I think it has something to do with the cards toggling between 2D clocks and 3D clocks. Different drivers might fix this, or you can force 2D clocks to match your 3D clocks (I think this can be done in Afterburner).

I don't use CCC. Just Afterburner to OC.
