Is it okay to OC SB with Manual Voltage only?

I have a msi p67 board, so there is no offset voltage unless set to auto, (which gives me like 1.3v at 4.5ghz) but if can manually set it to 1.248v but the thing is the volts do not downclock at idle, only the MHZ downclocks because theres no offset voltage,

so is 1.248v even when idle okay?

Yes its safe..

I am assuming you use speedstep to allow the cpu to downclock at idle, the only issue is that the power saving feature really isnt saving power and the voltage is the same..

But it should still cut down your idle temps, and 1.28v is safe regardless of the clocks. Even if its more than needed..

PS: when overclocking manually setting voltages will always be safer than leaving at auto. Auto has a tendency to over volt to accommodate clock freq changes..

yes C1E and speedstep are on, which allows the cpu to downclock from 4500mhz to 1600mhz, but the 1.248 voltage stays the same, if i use Auto voltage, it goes to 1.3v, but downclocks the voltage at idle aswell, but at the cost of need 1.3v for load

i want to know why msi mobos have no offset voltage -_-

Im not sure, maybe check out the MSI forums. The response time isnt like here, but they are pretty well versed in MSI. There may be a bios update that adds them?

As far as your voltage settings are concerned either way is "safe" so long as you can keep an eye on the voltage when set to auto and they are not all over the place.

1.28 - 1.30v are both safe voltages, whether or not they are "needed" is irrelevant. Most Intel cpu's have a default voltage or VID that is more than actually needed.

The max safe voltage is 1.52v for your CPU, so 1.28 or 1.30v is perfectly fine..

yeah, but i would prefer the 60c load temps of 1.248v then the 67c temp of 1.3v with the auto.

The only downside of having 1.248V manual is slightly higher power consumption at idle; the difference may not be enormous due to Intel using power gating - unused parts of the CPU are completely turned off. The increase in idle power may very well be compensated by the reduction in load power: 1.248V@ load should consume much less than the same CPU at 1.3V

Both settings are safe. You should just pick one depending on what you do more with the PC.

As I said, they are both safe so which ever you prefer is fine.

Personally I dont set Auto, even if I leave voltages at the same setting that auto does I usually still set them manually...


I personally do not use C1E or speedstep. If I want to conserve power I shut down.
