A 50% upgrade over 5 year old hardware is actually pretty bad.

I'll wait for the PS4. I play several console games but it's hardly my main platform (for the last 3 years).
And despite all that, the Wii is still holding the highest market share of the 3 main consoles out there. Why? Cause its unique. Nintendo makes a damn good product.

I'm willing to pass this 50% more powerful thing off as I did the "as powerful" quote. The CPU may be dragging it down overall, but the RAM (rumored three times as much, albeit two-thirds of that is VRAM) and GPU (three times easily?) are vastly improved, and those seem to be the biggest holdup (?).

Someone already said it, but a GeForce 8600GTS barely matches a GeForce 7800GTX (they trade blows depending on the use of shaders namely).

A GeForce 8800 GTX is probably almost around twice as fast, give or take.

Now, the PC enthusiasts out there are probably saying "So what, doesn't affect my PC games", but it does affect PC games as many of you have seen over the last few years as developers have begun making multiplatform games that have specs targeting the console tech. If the new consoles come out and don't advance much then I fear that consoles will continue to stagnate many types of PC games for another 5-6 years. Some games wouldn't be affected much, like RTS and MMO genres, but major first-person shooters could easily be affected along with many other types. The rise of console gaming has been great for the gaming industry as a whole, and developers, because tens of millions of people who didn't play games before are now becoming casual gamers, more customers means more money, but for PC enthusiast gamers I see this continuing trend as a bad thing for them.
I think this is a good line of thinking, but let me ease that worry by challenging that thought. There is going to have to come a point where the difference grows too big, and some developers will just have to come back to taking advantage of the PC side since there will be a customer base there for the taking. Of course, that's hopeful thinking, but it has some sense to it.

Crytek and 4A Games(Metro 2033) have gone on record for saying that developing on consoles pushes PC hardware far more than developing for PC exclusively given that consoles are innately more efficient than PCs are.
I agree. Consoles, while they hold things up, are part of the bigger picture pushing things too (just not directly most of the times).

That latter part I sort of disagree with though. That forces them, as developers, to be more efficient/less lazy since they can't be sloppy because they don't have excess power to use to pick up their slack. I wouldn't necessarily say the consoles directly push hardware because of that.

I though I heard that it was a RV770 GPU specifically. Namely, wouldn't that make it some sort of Radeon 48x0? I think I read somewhere about it using less power than a Radeon 4890, with slightly more performance (at least measuring gFLOPS). I'm not sure if it's a rumor or not.

I think the better comparison would be how much faster the Wii U is compared to the Wii, dont you agree? If the Wii U is the next gen "wii" in terms of raw horsepower it makes me extremely interested in what microsoft and sony are working on.

I still think it's not the graphics that make the game, but rather the experience. If the graphics don't advance THAT much I honestly wouldn't care.

50% more powerful, not 50% as powerful.

I'd get one, but am just terrified of what the catalog will look like. It terrifies me that they are going to go full retard on this controller(just like last time) and sacrifice/diminish gameplay/experience just to make this controller "stand out". Then again, I shouldn't really worry because they have stopped marketing towards me, Fallon and Oprah is their target in this part of the world. Can't really blame them I guess, that audience is quite big compared to OCNs =)

*edit* this also confirms that the 360/ps3 are = !!!
