Slow graphics Lenovo L512

Thread Starter
I'm getting extremely slow graphics on my Lenovo L512 2598-42U lately.

Over the past 2 weeks or so I've tried reinstalling 7, formatted and installed Ubuntu 11.04, and reformatted and installed XP most recently but the problem has persisted through all 3 OS's and I never had any issues until about a month or so ago.

If I open multiple (as little as 2-3) tabs in Firefox, Opera, Chrome or any other browser containing flash or flash video like youtube my computer spikes and remains at 80-100% cpu usage and hangs there until I end the browser process completely. It does this in video games as well. I used to play WoW and I'd have 30 fps constantly even in raids and now I can't even run it at the lowest settings without getting .5-1 fps.

I'm out of ideas on how to fix this. It's getting extremely frustrating.

There isnt any reason it should be doing that, have you called lenovo support? It sounds like a mainboard/cpu issue

It's not under warranty. I'm not the original owner.

no dont bake it,check the temps of the cpu and gpu if they are too high then thats probably why, also open it up and see if anything looks unusual maybe if it is getting too hot it could be something wrong with the heatsinks,i dont really know wat to say now as ive never experienced this kind of problem lol maybe (i cant believe im actually going to say this,it sickens me) maybe u should take it to a computer shop to get it checked out *vomits* sorry about that lulz

Dust and other yucky stuff probably is the cause here, its clogging up your HSF inside the laptop and the CPU/GPU are throttling. Time to open it up and have a go at it with an air compressor me thinks
post #7 of 9
Check the temps, make sure there isn't a mountain of dust clogging the heatsink fins.

Have you updated BIOS and/or drivers?

I'm leaning towards dust since I just moved into a new apartment and I've got carpeting again. It's running at about 80*C which is about 20-25* hotter than it was where I lived before. I'll dig around for a small screwdriver in a bit and see what it looks like inside.

Pulled the panel off and there wasn't much dust in there at all, but after blowing it out I'm at ~55-57*C about 65*C with WoW running.

edit: still getting really low fps for some reason.
edit2: nevermind, still about 80-85*C under load.
