[HotHardware] AMD Fusion: A8-3500M A-Series Llano APU Review

Today, AMD is lifting the veil on their next generation mainstream mobile processor, code named Llano. This latest volley by AMD is aimed at hitting Intel right in the mid-section, where the bulk of multimedia capable notebooks are sold. These are higher-end machines, where the likes of Intel's new Sandy Bridge-based Core i5 and Core i7 dual and quad-core processors live.

The platform we'll give you a look at today is AMD's A Series; specifically we have an A8 APU-based machine that we'll break down for your edification and spin up on the test bench so you can see its performance profile.

GPU performance is not impressive.

A8-3500M which has GPU with 400 shaders is only twice as fast as HD3000 in metro 2033 and Dirt. In far cry 2, HD3000 was very close to it !!

However, power consumption of Llano is impressive.

It is very impressive for an integrated GPU with hardly any dedicated components!

But it didn't perform as we expected ! Am I wrong ?

Many people thought that Llano is going to be more than 3 times as fast as intel graphics. But it performed less than twice as intel GPU in most cases. And we are talking about the 400 shader GPU. I really wonder how the lower-end LLano with 320 sp and 240 sp is going to perform.

Impressed, but not impressed at the same time. I see Apple utilizing Llano for some "magical 30,000 hour battery life" claim.

That's with intel's CPU to push the HD3000 which is part of why the AMD chip can't pull ahead so much. Graphics processing power alone isn't enough.

This is a nice mid-end APU.
Trinity seems a lot more interesting, though.
Let's just hope Intel isn't the "spikes".
I'd laugh if anyone catches that one.

How competitive will the pricing be? If it's going to be significantly cheaper than the i5-2520 then you can count me in...

It did better than I was expecting performance-wise but worse power-wise. So I guess it evens out to being about what I expected. Now the OEMs need to get on the ball and release a laptop. Nao. tongue.gif
