Wii U will NOT have a 4870 - Page 2

I'd believe 50% faster, that way they can get easy ports from the 360/ps3 without much optimization (beyond controller-specific stuff and possibly a higher res)

We can hope for higher but i agree, Nintendo has had great financial success with the Wii hardware and saw Sony/MS lose billions to establish themselves. They will likely ride-out this generation on ports and have something ready for when the x720/PS4 hit.

If it is true, in what context? How can we be sure the 50% is related to the GPU for sure? The CPU is rumored to be a quad core PPC @3.5GHz. That barely puts it over the Xbox 360 (tri core PPC @3.2GHz), so we have to assume that drags the average down (minus a core plus the clock speed and other small changes, say, between 25%-33% rough number pulling guess?), meaning the GPU and/or other areas "may" be over 50% faster on a part by part direct comparison to compensate?

There's alot of variables here. Just like we don't know it is a Radeon 4870, we don't know it isn't based on one percentage number. This thread is honestly just as much speculation as any other. I will say this though. I hope you're wrong. Only 50% faster in the video department is disappointing (even though Sony and Microsoft will likely be higher than this).

Also, a Radeon 4870 is probably more than twice as fast as a GeForce 7800GTX, no?

Here's this from the other thread, although as with all things, take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah this is definitely wrong. at least concerning the cpu.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/07/i...intendo-wii-u/
Turns out the cpu is based on a 45nm die contrary to the 32nm listed here. i think it's safe to say that the rest of these specs are fake.

It depends on the game. The console(s) themselves can support higher, but due to the limited GPU power, some are lower and scaled up. This is more common on the Playstation 3 I believe (Call of Duty Black Ops is like 1024x640 scaled up, yes, lower than 1024x768!).

And why would they include the GFLOPS of the GPU? And using a 32nm process chip would be antithetical to Nintendo's MO of using last-gen parts to keep costs down. In fact I think they actually specified that the Wii U's GPU would be 45nm. And they specified 480i to 1080p. It's a fake.

Yes, everything is speculation at this point, but I'd bet cash that the GPU in the Wii U will be at most an RV740 or equivalent, probably an RV730.
I sincerely hope it's not just 50% more powerful, but I guess since it's only Nintendo's console it's not that bad of a deal. I guess we'll find out. It's more if Sony and Microsoft hold back alot that it would be a bit worrying (technically they are by not releasing any news or anything, but again, we'll see).

The price of a GTX580 is 470$ on Amazon.
If they threw one in consoles now a days, you'd have the same problem the PS3 did.
They price would be high and even then, they would be making less money.

There is a reason why they're not using the top of the line stuff.
The price would be so high that people wouldn't buy it.
Not to mention, they would potentially be at a loss for everyone they sold.

People need to use their brains.

I'm talking about the people that complain about companies not using high end products in their hardware. Not to mention, this thing has probably been in development for quite some time.

Use your eyes and re-read my comment.
The comment wasn't directed to the him, even though I quoted him.

in the bulk they theoretically would be buying 580's, the cost would probably be a lot closer to half of their retail value....

No one's asking for top end hardware. The 4870 came out in 2008 and now costs less than $100, but the WII U is not even using a card that powerful (speculation). That's what the thread is about.

Let's just agree to not talk about the 580 anymore because it was meant to be funny and it went over your head.

...okay?

What if it has a 4770? Or a 4850? Or a 4870? Or even a 4890?

I...Don't...Caaaaare.... (modified piece of s song played by Kesha).

If it is a HD4870? Good for us!! If it is a 4770? Okay, good aswell!!

As long as it is optimised, I honestly don't care. To me, as if they tossed in a HD2900GT.

Most PS3 and 360 games look bad. No AA, low ress, popping, it's annoying. Nintendo, just make sure all games run at 1080p, are anti-aliased, and aren't popping obvious things. As long as the Wii U would have polish, it's fine, that's what's important.
