Looking to replace my GFX card

Thread Starter
My current Graphics Card died (Gigabyte NVidia GeForce 9800GT 512MB) and I am currently looking for an upgrade

I've been looking at getting a Gigabyte 1GB 6850

I've had this computer since '09 and my other components are:
Intel Core 2 CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz
2x 2GB DDR2 RAM
650w Coolmaster PSU

I'm not looking to buy a new motherboard at this stage but I'm also open to suggestions on CPUs & Memory
What would you do?
Thanks

It wouldn't be worth it to upgrade cpu/ram. A platform upgrade is needed ASAP.
As for graphics, what games do you play? or intent to play?

Lately I've been playing a lot of FPS so stuff like
COD:MW2 & B.O, Portal 2, Brink and I'll definitely be buying Battlefield 3 when it comes out

What would you buy if you had my system and didn't upgrade the motherboard, cpu & ram?

The 6850 is a solid choice, you should be able to play at a decent settings with good FPS.
The next best thing would be a 6950, but imo a platform upgrade would go before the 6950.

As an estimate, this is how much a platform upgrade would cost you:
Intel i5 2500k + Asus P8P67 Pro + G.Skill DDR3 RAM = ~450$.

Other than that, the Gigabyte 1GB 6850 would be a good choice for you.

What do you have to spend? The 6870 is about 180(140-160 after rebate) now. The next best thing is the 560ti which will be about 40 more and slightly faster, then a 6950.

460/6850/6870s can be found at clearance prices at a lot of places, so get the the best one you can afford. I've had a 6850 and there is a noticeable difference in the heavy stuff/DX11 games compared to a 6870.

You really need an upgrade but not as large as the guy previously suggested.

I would personally that:

i5 2500K
MSI P67 board (they make solid boards with 8x/8x for a price tag of like 150$)
4GB of ram (no need for 8GB to game, only for video editing, rendering, photoshop, etc.)
Mushkin makes great ram for cheap (got my 8GB for 60$...), you could also look at G. Skill or Corsair

For the video card, either a 6850 or 6950 cause Nvidia can only compete with the 6970.

I would get the HD6850, you will definitely see an improvement and the card won't be bottlenecked in games that aren't CPU intensive.

Anything above that is pretty much a waste of money unless you buy a new mobo and CPU.
