Each core in the SCCC runs a single OS instance—a customized version of Linux. So if you were to bring up an SCCC box on your network, it would logically look to the rest of the network like a rack of 48 systems, each with its own (non-virtualized) OS instance and IP address.
Intel was handing out free, working samples of the SCCC at the event (the picture above shows mine), which can be placed in a custom motherboard, shown below.

It is an interesting evolution of the server/thin client model, but I cringed at the thermal paste thumbprint.

Soldering your favorite caps onto that custom mobo would be a fun afternoon project for a novice tinkerer like me. I like that there are no SMT caps, I haven't figured out how to work with those using a standard iron and I guess you really need a hot air pen to do it well.

This is the most important part of the article, IMHO:
Quote:
The key problem with the push to many-core computing is that there's an entire generation of Ph.D. theses that need to be written before computer scientists and ordinary coders can wrap their collective heads around how best to exploit multicore for performance gains. The MARC initiative, then, is meant to seed that wider, more fundamental research process and accelerate it, so that the demand for higher core counts begins to catch up to Intel's ability to deliver those higher core counts.

I think taking advantage of multiple cores more efficiently is long overdue. TBH, it should have taken off a lot more back with the P4 architecture GHz stagnation. Then again, it's easy to suggest how things should have been done in the past.

This would be really cool. Like right now, you can buy a multiple core processor, but you have to run one OS on it, and can only really take advantage of anything if all of the software is specially prepared. With this, one chip and you have six newtork computers. One could really have a Doom rig on that, or really, any multiplayer game coolness. And not just some box with multiple controllers, but everyone with their own CPU.

It would be cool to have a core for Linux to do web and server stuff, a few cores for Windows, or whatever...
