Razer Megalodon + Logitech G15 = :(

Thread Starter
Hello, I have had the Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard for at least a few years now. I have been very pleased with the keyboard as well. I recently bought the Razer Megalodon and it is a fabulous headset. I read about all the issues that consumers had with the headset, and it seemed to all be fixed with the firmware update. Most of the problems were. However, I hadn't actually used the microphone for about a month after i bought it because i didnt need it, but today after attempting to load any VOIP program (Ventrilo, Mumble, TS3, etc) a little box pops up at the bottom of my screen saying that my USB Bandwith has been exceeded (Apparently the Razer Megalodon needs 62% of my USB Bandwith!?). After hours of research and troubleshooting, i found one solution, Buy a USB HUB like this [ame="http://www.amazon.com/CyberPower-High-Speed-7-Port-USB-Hub/dp/B0006TIA8Y/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1308025761&sr=8-10"]CyberPower High Speed USB Hub[/ame]. To me that seemed unreasonable that i had to purchase an additonal USB Hub just to use this headset, so i went back to troubleshooting and managed to narrow it down.

I learned that for some reason, the Logitech G15 Keyboard and the Razer Megalodon really dont like each other for some reason. I went into Ventrilo's setup to test the microphone, as soon as i hit the test button, the USB Bandwith was exceeded like usual (Microphone didnt work of course). I closed ventrilo, unplugged my keyboard, loaded ventrilo back up, and my microphone works without any issues. As long my G15 Gaming Keyboard's program doesnt load up, my Razer Megalodon Microphone works perfectly fine, but as soon as i turn on the program for the LCD, macros, etc., my USB bandwith shoots like crazy. (Note: Without the keyboard plugged in, the razer megalodon usage is at 8%.)

I plugged in my brothers Logitech G110, no problems at all. USB Bandwith is fine, microphone works fine... I also even plugged my headset into his computer, and no problems at all. (We have the same exact motherboard.)

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

In my experience with the G15, the USB ports are non powered, it would make sense to me that it would have a terribly difficult time poweriing headphones through the USB ports. But are you plugging headphones into the ports on the keyboards or into the motherboard? Could definitely make this more interesting.

I agree with the post above. I tried to run my Razer Deathadder through my G15 and it wouldn't let me as well. But in my experience it wasn't a problem since the Razer cable length is usually plenty.

Strange, I'm running a Deathadder through a G15 (v1) right now. But yeah, anything that requires a lot of power won't work through the USB 1.0 ports on the G15 (ext HDDs, USB headsets, etc.)

I had the same issues with my g15 and megladons. I just never used the mic tbh.

I plug everything into my mobo. So yes, my Megalodon is plugged into the back of my computer, aka the motherboard. I tried plugging my ipod into my G15 so i didnt have to reach to the back of my computer and it said that it didnt have enough power to even charge my ipod... After that i never even tried to plug anything into the keyboard because the USB ports on it seemed useless.

I was going to send in a ticket to razer and see what they suggested since i see it being on their end and not Logitech.

bump

I called Razer seeing what they suggested, but they were no help either. Seems as if im the first person to actually link the two together...

I happen to have the Razer Megalodon. I highly doubt there is an issue between your keyboard and the headset specifically.

The reason you might need a USB hub is power. The Megalodon eats up a lot of power (or manages it poorly), and I imagine the G15 does as well. My Megalodon, when run from its own hub, has no functional problems whatsoever. When I hook it up to a hub that is in use, my problems vary; sometimes, it works perfect. Other times, I get some or all of these various problems:
1. Sound will randomly stop entirely. Disconnecting/reconnecting fixes this, albeit temporarily.
2. Other devices will stop working as intended.
3. Horrifying microphone sounds.
4. USB hub simply disconnects all devices. (Only had this happen once, though.)
5. Sound gets super quiet (disconnect/reconnect)
6. Lights on the Megalodon act..funky. Volume level lights may only work intermittently; headset ones won't turn on at all..

It is a great sounding headset. I'm considering changing it out for a G930, but this is the first headset I've ever owned that feels awesome with glasses. The G930 looks like it'd be another skullcrusher in that regard. These minor issues do not show up whatsover (okay, the mic issue sometimes rears its ugly head) when hooked up to a barely used USB hub or its own USB hub. I'm 99% certain it's a power issue at this point. The Megalodon uses too much or manages what it gets poorly (seems to me that if it was not getting enough power, it would simply not work); hence why you need a self-powered USB hub.

I understand that both, the G15 Keyboard and the Megalodon eat up alot of power. But the weird thing about is when i have just the keyboard plugged in, its only using 7% of my USB bandwith. If i have just the Megalodon plugged in, it only uses 9% of my USB bandwith. Its only when they are both plugged in the Megalodon jumps up to 62%...confused.gif

I read somewhere about something called an IRQ(maybe?), and if the Megalodon and the G15 Keyboard were on the same IRQ(hmm?) it could cause problems. Not really sure on this one though.

Also, the problem may seem... odd. But after researching it for a few hours, anyone with a G15 keyboard and the Razer Megalodon seemed to have a USB bandwith problem somewhere along the road..
