I don't render (i5-2500k), but I did see a marked improvement in render times when going from stock (turbo disabled) to my 24/7 4.8GHz overclock.

Its actually over 2 minutes faster overclocked, which I'd say would add up quite fast if you had a lot of workload.

I have no idea how the i5-2500k compares to the i7-2600k in this setting, nor do I know how well either perform vs a 970 around 4GHz.

If only I got get my paws on some benchmarks from the OC'd 2600k vs OC'd 970
Altough according to this:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/39
it claims that the 970 beats the 2600k.

is waiting for Sandy-Bridge E socket LGA2011 an option?
if not, then the i7 970 will be faster as those things.

According to your link its only slightly faster with 200Mhz disadvantage, unless you're planning to build a $300+ custom water loop, or go phase change, the end result of overclocking is going to favor the i7-2600k more so than it does there.

I would still give the 970 a slight advantage, however its not going to be a lot. The question you have to ask yourself is if the slightly faster speed is worth nearly twice the price.

Get dual socket Xeons.

i7-990x vs i7-2600k

It's with a 990x instead of a 970, but it shouldn't make too much of a difference in terms of maximum overclock.

Heh, I'd agree if he didn't already say a single Xeon is out of his budget range.

We have a lot of enthusiasts here, and I don't often see people running 970s at 4.66GHz, or anyone with a 990x doing it with anything less than a $300+ custom loop. I think that should factor into it somehow as well.

yea, that has been bugging me too. Pricewise the 2600k is a best option.
Peformance wise the 970. Besides that the extra ram is what wanted in the first place. So its probably a matter of 6gb of extra ram and peformance vs price.

Is there a deadline?

I only ask because SBe is coming up pretty quick. You should be able to get a x6 chip for around the same price as the 970 currently, only it will be faster with all the pros of SB with an additional 2 cores and 4 threads.

It also has quad channel memory, but from what I've seen it will only have 4 dimm slots. I could be wrong, but the boards I've seen have two dimms on each side... It may just be protype designs though.

Anyways, you should give SBe a read, you may find its worth the wait.
