So whats the deal with the Vertex 3?

Thread Starter
The drive gets great performance reviews, but on the forums it gets about 75% bad reviews due to firmware and other issues.

I want to get a new drive, and I want to get the Vertex 3, but there's so many alarms saying to not buy it.

I don't want to get an Intel, but the 510 is looking like the better option now since its reliable.

The vertex 3 is on sale for $265 at my local shop today... not a bad price.

I'm in the same boat as you two. I would however recommend the crucial m4 (which I'm leaning towards) over the intel 510. Both have similar failure rates of <2%, but the m4 has the better 4k and 4k32D numbers which are most important for everyday OS usage.

Yep. I had one of those new Vertex 3 Max IOPS, updated to 2.06 firmware and from this moment on...system stalling/locking, BSODs, drive dissapearing until cold boot...I do not recommend them. Go for another not-as-fast-but-much-reliable option.

FYI Corsair is having issues with their Force 3 series as well (120GB model).

Crucial and Intel are looking like the most solid choices at this point.

Have G.Skill/Mushkin/Patriot released any third gen SSDs yet? I stopped paying close attention to the SSD game after I got my gen 2 Force drive.

Hmmm that sucks. I really was looking forward to getting the Vertex 3...

I guess I will look into Crucial as an option then over the 510 if it is just as reliable and faster for everyday tasks.

I found the Crucial C300 and M4, both are priced about the same.. which is better? both are SATA III as well.

I know the c300 is a very popular choice. Probably would've gone that route but got an intel for a good price.

I see now that the M4 is newer than the C300, but the performance #s look very close.

How does one choose one over the other?

Ok, I'm gonna go with a Crucial M4 or C300 as I can get either one for about $50-60 less than the Intel 510.

I found the M4 for $215 CAD and the C300 for $225 CAD. both 128GB versions.

I know there are more happy C300 users, but mainly cause the M4 hasn't been around as long.

Which one should I get?
