I am upgrading to a MSI GTX 580 Lightning soon but I want to use my Accelero Xtreme on the card. I'm not sure if it will fit because I heard the Lightning has a completely custom board. Fortunately for me I am from South Africa so my Xtreme Plus shipped with all the various heatsinks VR00X so I have the VR004 for the 580. Are the heatsinks good enough for the VRMs? because my 5870's VRMS get pretty toasty in furmark.

It seems the only difference between the AXP and AXPII is that it comes with all the heatsinks, which is funny cuz that means I had an AXPII since mid last year
Why would you need to use this on a MSI Lightning? The only reason people bought custom coolers before was the lack of cooling performance of stock coolers, with the dawn of MSI's custom coolers the performance equals or exceeds Arctic coolers. Not to mention Arctic coolers still use useless heatsinks while MSI uses a entire heat plate which is much more effective at cooling the memory and VRMs.

I think aftermarket coolers now are just a waste of money for only a miniscule amount of cooling performance again.

The Lightning's TFIII cooler keeps the card extremely cool already, I am pretty impressed with the performance. As a previous AXP owner I will say that the one area the AXP still beats all other coolers in is noise- the thing is whisper quiet at 100%.

One good thing is that the VRM/VRAM heatsink on the Lightning looks as though it will clear the AXP without modding. So you can remove the TFIII and use the AXP with the stock cooling on the rest of the card. Take a look at this pic to see what I mean. All you have to do is screw the correct mounting plate onto the AXP base and mount it to the card.

Err the Arctic runs pretty much silent and has better temps then the Twin Frozr III on the 580 and if you can use the arctic cooler and keep the VRM sinks from the Lightning then that's the ultimate air cooling.

@theonedub Yea judging from that pic it looks very doable since the sinks there are pretty low there's enough clearance for the accelero. I'll run the twin frozr III for a couple days to see how well it performs. Just installed the card now.

The truth is that you are not going to need this unless you are overclocking, stock coolers usually offer efficient cooling at stock speeds.

Yes, why buy a card like this if you don't wish to OC further. It's just not worth it.

I tried putting my Accelero 1 onto it last night but it doesn't fit the DVI ports get in the way of the heatsink/heatpipe. It looks like the accelero extreme 2 solves this problem with that little bit cut out.

What model HIS 5870 do you have? The original AXP came in two varieties- one standard version and one version for the 5870 that specifically had part of the heatsink cut off to clear the stacked DVI ports on ATI/AMD cards.

I'm curious how you were able to get a standard AXP (without the cutout) onto a 5870 without hitting the stacked DVI ports.

I have the reference 5870 with a accelero xtreme plus, it fit just fine as the core is not right at the back like the 580 so that's why i'm having trouble mounting it onto the lightning

Oh, I see. The AXP clears the VRM/VRAM heatsink without issue though?
