I have a stock cooler - This needs replacing! Any Advice, Tips, Suggestions... :)

Hi Everyone,

I am new here, joined today, and I have come here to solve a few problems that I currently have with my computer!

I have had my computer for about 2 years now, running good with an Intel i7 940 @ 2.93 Ghz. I got my computer as a xmas present and wasn't expecting it on the day, although I did say I wanted a new computer earlier in the year.

Anyway, because this was a gift that I didn't know about, I didn't have control on what was going into the computer when it was being built. The computer is from Alpine Systems who are based in Gloucestershire, UK. They build specialised computers to run Microsoft Flight Simulator X on!

I have only just realised that actually having a stock cooler is a bad thing, if you want to then go on and overclock, which I do want to do after we have sorted out the cooling! Before I knew it, I thought Stock Coolers were ok...

(Now I hate stock coolers )

Soooo I want to replace it with a good performing cooler that will decrease my CPU temperatures. At the moment they are running at about 50C... At Idle!.... :/ Thats why I have come here for help!

Earlier today, after realising that I need to change it, I have been looking on the internet for various coolers. On a flightsimulator forum (If anyone has heard of PMDG (Precision Manuals Development Group), this is where they advised me on this cooler) they talked about the Corsair A70 cooler

Looked it up and I can get one for around £30.00 Which is good!

I'm here just for some advice, because I am, honestly, a real beginner when it comes to the insides of a computer and components, software i'm pretty good on

Here's some info on some bits:

Computer case dimensions:
Quote:
H: 43.3 cm /433 mm
W: 20 cm /200 mm
L: 48.1 cm /481 mm
Corsair A70 Dimensions:
Quote:
159.5 x 124.6 x 129 mm (WxHxD)
Current Stock Cooler info:
Quote:
Intel E29477 - 002
CNFN939612
1A016MV00 - DHF
DC 12V 0.21 A
Foxconn
My computer is positioned in my bedroom, under my desk, on the floor.

Some Pics of my setup!:

So I just really want some advice on the current specs I have, if I need to change any please do let me know and I'll have a look but for now I really want the cooler sussed! And knowing that it is actually cooling my CPU properly! (Stupid Stock Cooler... )

I really really do appreciate the help guys!!

Best Wishes,

Tristan Marchent

A70 is good, have you also checked the uber popular hyper212+? it will be really tight inside the case though.

also, your fans are a bit dirty, try to clean it a bit and see if it helps lol

I presume w/c loop = Watercooler Loop?

That's good that you like it! But isn't 37C a bit too warm for idle? With that cooler on? Because at idle im getting just under 50C with a stock cooler!... Good that its easy to install thankyou!

Yep! Noticed that they are bit dirty, will clean them, but probs will only make a slight difference :/

Will look at the hyper212 But as you said I dont want a really tight fit!

Do you think the Corsair A70 will fit? And I hear that you have to put a liquid substance onto your CPU when using the cooler? What is this for??

Thanks for your help!

both the a70 and hyper 212+ are around 16 cm, you listed your case width is 20 cm. so you have about less than 4 cm to work with, and you still have to include the motherboard.

the thermal paste is included with the coolers so you don't have to buy one.

$24 after rebates

and if you can fit a 140mm fan of the back of that case (looks like it can to me) than throw in one of these for $5 more ($2.99 after rebate $1,99 shipping)

It would probably help your idle temps a lot if you'd add a fan to the rear of your case. CPU temps are determined by ambient temps too and the warmer that it is, the hotter it's going to run, even at idle.

On the matter of a cooler, I run the H50 and it works great on my MSI X58 PRO i7 920 clocked at 3.4ghz and another on my P6T Deluxe i7 960 that's clocked to 3.8ghz (and climbing! ). The H70 should work great in your rig.

edit:

Opps, I could have sworn that I read "H"70 but I see that you meant "A"70.... the air cooler. I haven't air-cooled in a while but when I did, I was using the Mugen 2 (probably too big) and the Megahalem (For sure too big!) Why not try the Corsair liquid coolers?
