Sandy Bridge Gaming Rig - Last Check In

Thread Starter

This rig will be my first ever build so I am being extra cautious selecting components (aside from also being just a tad bit nervous I'm going to screw this one up). I will be using this rig primarily as my gaming rig. I've gotten some great feedback which I've incorporated into my build and could use one final nod of approval or comment before I pull the trigger this week.

My build ($1800 budget, excluding OS)

CPU: Core i5 2500K
Heatsink: Antec Kuhler H2O Water Cooler
TIM: MASSCOOL G751 Shin Etsu TIM
MB: GIGABYTE GA-Z68MX
MEM: G.Skill Ripjaw X Series 8GB DDR3 1600
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 6970 2GB
Case: NZXT Phantom (Black)
PS: Corsair HX Series 650W
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200RPM
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB
DVD R/W: ASUS DVD-RW
Monitor:

Keyboard: RAZER Arctosa Silver Keyboard
Mouse: RAZER Deathadder Gaming Mouse

TOTAL: $1762.97 (including shipping, combo deal discounts, instant savings, excluding around $60 in rebates)

Any thoughts? Thanks!

That build looks pretty good but you're power supply may be limiting you for future improvements, if I were you I wouldn't spend that much on a monitor and spend a bit more on a power supply.

The mouse looks pretty good as they have fixed the jitter problems with the firmware/drivers, you may want a different keyboard as that one may have problems down the way.

my recommendations:

Corsair H50
with a push/pull setup. Has more support and I am pretty sure reaches cooler temps.

ASUS VH236H replacing your Dell Ultrasharp Monitor. In my opinion I think this monitor would be better for gaming.

The rest looks good but you may want to revise your current keyboard, what I found weird is I viewed this thread and I just got the CD/DVD burner you had listed here from UPS today.

It looks good. I second the h50, it's awesome. Or maybe look into the h60? Also, have you looked into getting a 6950 2gb and unlocking it into a 6970 maybe saving a few bucks?

I hope you know your board is a Micro-ATX one.

I do hope you did combo some of those items...just to name a couple:
CASE + PSU
CPU+MOBO

And I'd totally stick with the Dell monitor over that Asus. IPS panel any day of the week.

Looks very good though.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

@Sasuke2525. Everything I've read on the Antec Kuhler had it beating the Corsair H60 pretty handily.

@Claymanhb. I've researched the HD6950 but everything I've heard has said that those HD6950 that can be "unlocked" are tough to come by now.

@Tig Ole Bitties. Re: Monitor. This is the area I've been waffling about the most. I've read that eIPS is great for image quality, but due to 8ms response time, is subject to ghosting in gaming (I play wide range from FPS to RPG to MMOs). On the other hand, I've read that TNs will have a poor quality image but less apt to ghosting. Do you or anyone have additional clarity?
Looks very similar to the rig that I'm building! And I'm stuck on the monitor too. I would agree with Clayman, the 6950 can be tweaked to the 6970. good call going with the xfx brand though, that lifetime warranty is a sweet deal!!!!
Never heard anyone having a good experience with XFX warranty. Friends don't let friends buy XFX.

The MSI reference are the cheapest 6970's on Newegg right now.

If you want to game, get a 120hz monitor. Something like this will work -

Really??? Maybe I'll have to reconsider... CompUSA has them with a $45 mail in rebate right now that brings them down to $244. Wish I woulda paid more attention to what brand it was!!

Looks very solid..

for your memory, unless you like the blue, I'd get this Corsair Vengeance set:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233144

Or even this Kingston if you want to save some cash. these have tons of rebates on top of $10 off w/ promo code EMCKDJF28, ends 6/20
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104173

Also I don't see anything wrong with buying XFX.
I've personally never had a problem with them... they have pretty standard warranty coverage. imo barely any different from any other manufacturer.
