When you formatted and reinstalled Windows 7, did you avoid SP1 as per my recommendation?

Whatever the case is, I think you're giving up way too easily. Windows 7 is 100x better than XP.

You could try changing the sata port to IDE mode through bios. - tell your "friend" to try that, btw seems like you don't care for this "friend" much..

Also- you might try other ram slots, I have had issues like this be caused by a bad DIMM slot on a motherboard.
