First Build; Need help with components.

Thread Starter
I am planning on building my first PC by the end of the summer. Being a novice to this, I would like some help choosing the components. I have a budget of $850 but I'll have no trouble moving it up to $1000. An AMD system would be ideal. Overclocking is not in the future, but Crossfire is. I just need a decent gaming rig that will run most games on high settings with a 900p monitor.
Here's what I was planning on:

Motherboard: ???
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T*
CPU cooler: ???**
Video card: AMD Radeon HD 6850
Memory: ???***
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB
Optical Drive: Lite-On DVD burner
Power Supply: ???
Case: Corsair 650d
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

*I've seen other AMD Phenom black editions around the same price of the 1055t. Should I get one of them?

**Preferably fan and at a decent price. I hear Corsairs H50's and other similar to it leak fluid.

***I would like 8gigs, but I'm not sure what brand to get.

I'll be ordering off of Tiger Direct.

Don't get a six core if you are going to game. Get a 955 they are cheap as dirt now but they may bottleneck your future crossfire configuration

I thought that six cores were ideal for gaming?

Just to let you know, ordering EVERYTHING off TigerDirect is really not optimal. They have a really bad RAM selection, for one. Often it'll be cheaper and better getting something off Newegg, even if you're in...say, California, and must pay taxes.

Nope almost every game out at this moment doesn't use six cores. Only some started recently using four.

If you want to go air cooling, I would go with the Scythe Mugen 3. I use the Mugen 2 on my 955 rig, and at 4GHz/1.44v at 100% load with ambient temperatures around 22c, my CPU temperature is around 50c. Even when we had a bit of a heat wave earlier this month and ambient temperatures got up to around 35-37c, CPU temperature stayed around 55c.

(edit: The temps I listed above are with the stock fan, you could do better with Gentle Typhoons on there or something like that.)

For a power supply, I like the Antec EarthWatts 650w. I've been using one for years in my main rig, and it's still going strong. I just bought a second one for my dedicated folding rig.

For a motherboard, maybe the ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3. It's what I use in my main rig, and it's worked really well for me.

As far as RAM, if you're just gaming, you may not need 8GB. I don't know a ton about RAM though, so I can't recommend anything specific. People seem to like Corsair and G.Skill a lot.

So I'm looking at a rig like this:

Motherboard: ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
CPU cooler: Cooler Master V8 CPU Fan or Cooler Master Hyper N520 (unless something else is suggested)
Video card: AMD Radeon HD 6850
Memory: 4GB (of some brand, 8 if I have enough money left over)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB
Optical Drive: Lite-On DVD burner
Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts 650w (or something simular)
Case: Corsair 650d
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Any more input? I am looking at playing Battlefield 3, Portal 2, and other graphic intensive games.

That all looks good to me. I'm sure you'll be able to get very good performance in those games. I can play BF:BC2 on high settings with my 955 BE + 6850 rig and stay right around 60 FPS at 1440x900.
