Arrangement of video/sound cards

Thread Starter
I apologize for the noobness of this thread. I have an idea of how I should arrange my cards but wanted to double check with the ocn community biggrin.gif Right now, I own a bfg gtx 285 and an auzentech x-fi forte on this motherboard [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KX8VES"]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KX8VES[/ame]

In preparation for bf3, im thinking of getting a gtx 580 sometime down the road. If I want to install it, I'm guessing that I should install the gtx 580 in the top slot, then move the gtx 285 amd x-fi forte down one?

Run your GPU in the first PCIe x16 slot then run the sound card wherever it fits such as the second or third PCIe x16 if it's a PCIe card or either of the PCI if it's PCI, simply as that. Good luck and if you have more questions you will get more accurate advice if you fill out your system specs. smile.gif

hmmm, any reason why to have the sound card in the middle other then cooling? i thought the 285 would need the pci x16 slot

ps: any other recommended upgrades are welcome in preparation for bf3 biggrin.gif

Just for cooling. He means the sound card in the middle only if you do add that 580 you mentioned, in which case what he said is right you want the 580 in top slot, sound card in middle and 285(for PhysX) in the bottom. If you have just the 285 and sound card then you want to do like I mentioned 285 top slot and the sounds card as far away from the GPU as possible. As for upgrades I would wait until BF3 comes out before buying an upgrade for it, by the time it comes out Kepler may just be coming out or you will atleast have an idea of what it wil offer and better prices for current gen GPUs.

The good 'ol 285 will be all but passed over, being demoted to physx duties only when you purchase and install a 580. The 285 wont be getting used more that 15% (guessing here) and by no way needs a full 16x pci-e bandwith slot.

1)For your motherboard EVGA X58 E758:
1 card in Slot 1: x16
2 cards in Slots 1 and 2: x16/x16
3 cards in Slots 1, 2 and 3: x16/x8/x8

2)
BFG GTX285 OC is reference cooling
new GTX580 is also reference cooling (assume)
Auzentech X-Fi Forte is a PCIe card in low profile format

With these 2 considered, I think:
a. Because the GTX285 is a full height card, it should not sit below the GTX580 as it will block off air intake for the GTX580

b. This means the sound card should sit below the GTX580 as the sound card is a low profile card. Now, this has 2 possibilities. GTX580 in Slot 1+sound card in Slot 2 vs GTX580 in Slot 2+sound card in Slot 3

c. Possibility 1 is preferred unless the GTX285, sitting in Slot 3, has physical conflict with motherboard edge headers and/or getting too close to the PSU below

(Final note:-If the GTX580 dumps heat inside the case, then more detailed consideration needs to be taken.)

i guess another solution would be to just sell the gtx 285. having a gtx 285 card just for physx seems pretty gaudy since it will sit there and be idle most of the time. selling a video card online somehow gives me bad thoughts tho
