As I pointed out earlier, Steam forces people to install their client also with certain games i.e. Just Cause 2, even if you don't want it. It goes both ways. If I hated Steam and I wanted to play JC2, I'll have to deal with Steam or not buy it. That simple.
Activision, EA and any other publisher can do whatever they want with their IPs. Why, because the US is based on capitalism, and the consumers are free to make a choice to buy or not to buy. EA is in the business of making money, and to continue to feed the $900M Gorilla in Steam, is bad business.
