HP G60 AMD Turion Replacement

Thread Starter
Hello
I have an HP G60 445DX that I bought a couple years ago. However the processor runs waaaaaayyyyyyyy to hot and it has crashed my computer several times and drags the battery down in charge quite a bit. The processor is an AMD Turion 64 x2 running at 35W. Here's a link to the specs:

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD...75DAM22GG.html

Anyways I was thinking about replacing it to see if it improves battery life and decreases the heat in the computer, possibly with a Turion 2 or Phenom processor. Any suggestions? I run the computer mainly for multimedia, mainly music and video on Ubuntu, but also do some gaming on Windows 7, so I'm need a fairly advanced processor but I'm not exactly open to spending a lot of money.

35W? You mean 35C? 35C sounds normal to me. My Toshiba idles around that and gets even hotter when multitasking. Grab a can of compressed air and clean the heatsink/fan. If you're still worried buy one of those coolers with fans to put underneath it.

Can't really upgrade it. I don't think that socket could support a Phenom. The Turion 2 won't even make a difference. Best bet is to just sell it then buy a proper gaming laptop.

No actually he is right.. it does take 35Watts..

Also, the Socket S1 does not support a Phenom of any sort. Your only options are Athlon 64 X2; Turion 64 X2; Mobile Sempron; Turion 64 (MK series only).

My advice if you wanted insane battery life would be a Sempron of some sort, they take barely any power what so ever in their desktop versions, so I would assume their laptop versions would follow suit. If you want speed, a Athlon 64 X2 would be best I would think.

I got that with the mobile sempron.

You want to keep the turion.

Your problem lies within the heatsink. You must remove it, remove the fan, clean out all the dust and etc. then re- apply thermal paste. You will get 10C or more improvement and 10-20C improvement underload.

I can't believe you want to game on this...

If you fix your heatsink, get NVIDIA System tools and you can OC your dual core Turion to 2.5ghz (Increases RAM clock too)

Conner: Well I don't do really serious gaming I think I said light. Most of my games run just fine actually they're fairly old now. Like I said, I only was looking to get something that will run quieter and cooler. 35W is a little higher than I like...

Dudeson169: Do you think that an Athlon 64 x2 would increase battery life as well as speed? I don't know as much about AMD CPUs as Intel's so I'm not exactly sure whether to get a Sempron or Athlon. That is, if I change CPUs.
