The verdict is still out. EA knows they lose a lot of digital sales for every title they pull off of Steam. So, they are only starting with the big titles, the titles they assume will sell well either way. Although I hear they may just do an exclusive "collector's edition" type of thing for Origin and still sell the game on Steam. Who knows though.
They've most definitely already pulled Crysis 2 and nothing of importance was lost. Still, it is a distressing trend. I will never use Origin myself, I know its a little hypocritical but I am already used to Steam and have most of my games there. If everyone buys into EA's Origin then Activision will launch their own service which you must use for their games, Ubisoft, etc. We'll end up having to launch 5 or 6 different digital distribution clients just to access all your games, friends, patching and community features. To me that sounds like a little slice of hell.

That is just what EA hopes. I think in large part you are right, but you never know. The thread in the news section was VERY busy and lot of people were pretty pissed. They may end up losing a few more digital sales than they planned on, of course they are probably more than happy eating those sales if it means long term viability for their Origin service.
